Default Gas Gauge Takes Forever to Change after Fill-up

Hi All,

Newbie to the forum.

I have an 03 Dodge Ram 2500 Hemi. Love the thing.

Whenever I go to fill up, after doing so I usually turn the key to the next position. When I do that, the fuel gauge doesn't change at all. (It stays showing empty)

Then when I start the truck it starts to go up...but very slowly. Like really slowly.

Could this be an indicator of anything?

Thanks in advance!

Has anything changed recently? My 04 takes some time to climb to full, it's all part of the dampening circuits to keep the fuel gauge from bouncing as fuel sloshes around in the tank. Mine can take 5 minutes or better to register full. If yours is the same it sounds normal to me.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply. It's a recent purchase so I just wanted to make sure it was ok.

Thanks for the quick answer!

Welcome to the forum. Mine has done it once since I gained ownership about 18 months ago. Just keep an eye on it. Try not to let the fuel level get past 1/4 to empty. Keep us posted.

Strange. Mine jumps right to full (then I hear a satisfied burp).

Mine did as well. Could be the float arm is hanging on a wire. Or the electrical portion is worn out. It's a potentiometers setup.

My 04 does this too. I've often wondered if maybe the fuel pump was going out (still pumps fine though).

That's what I was worried about too. I guess I'll just keep watching it and look for any other signs of a WP going out.

Thanks for the reply!

Fuel pump and fuel gauge are two separate Parts.

i changed my fuel pump last year, the whole bucket and everything, and ever since that i have the same problem,
probably made a mistake or pinched something,
takes 5 mins or 2 or 3 starts after refueling for the gas guage to show full, after that it works fine
