Default MPG 2005 RAM QC 4x4 HEMI is crap

I have only been getting 13.1 on hwy and local driving, I went out of town last weekend pulling a trailer and 1 ATV for a 560 mile round-trip and only got 10.1 and i had the cruise set at 72. My truck currently has 7500 miles on it. Can anyone please tell me what to expect in the long run or is this how it is with these Hemi's. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank You

I never trust the overhead console. It says we are getting 12.7 ALL the time. we tested and we were actually getting 14 city. The gas mileage will get better as time goes on I think.

I average 13.5-14 with more city miles than highway. It all depends how you drive it. I have seen 14.5 in the city once, but how boring it was, under 2K RPMS at all times.

If you are going 72 on the highway do not expect much better than 15 or so. You would be amazed how much better it gets at 55-60.

Says right on the sticker 11-15 city 14-20 freeway with a 13 city and 17 highway average.....

Reguardless of manufacture, your MPG doesn't sound out of the ordinary for a 5500+lb truck with 345 hp. I doubt it will get any better under the same driving conditions.

That does not sound right.

Do you have 3.92 gears?

I read somewhere that Dodge introduced MDS in the 06 Rams because the Hemi had poor fuel economy on the highway with these gears.

I have found that fighting a headwind will screw you. Makes at least a 2MPG difference vs no wind at all.

Have you tried mid-grade fuel?

It may get a little better, but I wouldn't start spending any of the extra gas money yet. I've got about 30k on mine, and I get about 13.5, mixed city and highway, mostly city. I'll get close to 15 straight highway, 70 or under. That's up from about 11 when I first got it. It's also from the computer. I know guys say those are off, but I've never gotten interested enough to do the paper and calculator to check it. I've switched to a K&N drop in air filter and Mobil1 and each showed giving me an extra .5-1 mpg. They may help you as well.

I've seen some pretty extreme claims on here like 18-19 with the Hemi's. I won't say they're bs, but I sure can't figure our how they get it.

I know what the sticker said and it wasn't 10 hwy and 10 city. So what gives? The more i drive it the worse it gets. I've had 3 rams before this one and never had any MPG problems like i'm having with this 05 model. I drive the speed limit in town and usually around 70-72 on the highway and usually always have the cruise on. i don't have a cover for the bed, only use a 5th wheel tailgate so i know i have no air restrictions there. I have 3.73 gears

my mechanic says as you break in the mileage should improve........

as with reddemon, my console says 13.2 +/-............

i was going to buy the diesel but up here in canada it's an extra 10-15K!! so i figure at a tank a week that's 2-3 years of gas!! so i went to the Hemi and i love it.

if gas consumption is that much of a concern...........

ps. first post. hello from canada

I bought my truck with only 4 miles on the odometer, and until I reset the overhead console MPG setting, it was stuck at some single-digit reading. I'm thinking that, as part of the manufacturer break-in, they they let the engine run through a tank of gas at idle or something. Next time you fill up, reset the overhead console MPG setting and see what you get.

My average city/highway driving MPG has been about 15 average. On a trip from Greenville, SC to Atlanta, GA (and back) I got almost 19 MPG while driving anywhere from 60 to 70 MPH, and this included a short period of city driving (this according to the overhead console). I have the standard 26 gallon tank, and have managed over 400 miles on a single tank a handful of times now.

My truck has a little over 8,000 miles on it.

-- edit --

I have a 1500, QC, 2005, Hemi, 4x4.
