Default 2005 Rear Wheel Bearing Change

I've searched to the end of the internet and back with no luck.

Can someone point em to a video or instructions on how to change the rear wheel bearing 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad cab RWD. The ones I have found are close but don't have the axle bearing or use inner and outer bearings.

Thanks,

Robert

Light, or heavy duty rear axle? (both are 9.25's, not sure what the difference would be, but, the bearings certainly are different. Build sheet would tell you. Get one here, click on 'equipment listing', then enter your vin.

Get the national replacement bearing. (unless you can find timkin?)

Raise the rear, and support it on jackstands. Not blocks, not ramps. Jackstands. I have seen blocks, and ramps cause serious injury. (at extremely close range once......)
Remove the rear tire(s?) and drums.
Pull the rear cover off the diff.
Turn it till you can see the bolt that holds the center pin in the carrier. Take it out.
Push the center pin out, at least far enough that you can push the axle in.
Push the axle IN toward the center, and the c-clip will fall out, or, the lube may hold it in place, just to make you move again. In any event, take it out, set it aside.
Pull the axle straight out.
You will likely need a slide hammer to pull the bearing, and outer axle seal.......
Once you have the old one out, tap the new one in. (bearing.) use a block of wood between the hammer and bearing, and only apply force to the outer race of the bearing. Drive it in straight, if it gets cocked, started over. You do not want to damage the bearing.
When the bearing is seated, smear some gear lube on the surface of the seal that will be riding on the axle. Install the seal the same way you did the bearing. Block of wood, and a hammer. make sure it goes in straight, and seats where it should.
Then just put the other stuff back together, and refill the rear diff. Dump in what it calls for, and let it sit for 30 minutes, then check fluid level again.
Some folks use a gasket on the rear cover, others just use RTV. (my method.) Don't be stingy with it, but, don't go overboard either. Torque the bolts in a circular pattern, like you would lug nuts. You can let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour, to let the RTV cure some if ya like.
Drive it around the block once or twice, and then check fluid level again.

Thanks HeyYou!!! Very very helpful. One quick question, I assume I need to pack the bearing before I put it in or does this setup use fluid from the differential for lubrication?

Uses the fluid in the rear diff. Wouldn't hurt to soak it good before installation. (though, it's messy, and the fluid STINKS...... hence, you will too. )

Everyone, thanks for all the help and comments. Mission complete. Shocks replaced, wheel/axle bearings and seals, parking brake, brakes and rotors. I ended up getting a Haynes manual which was quite helpful.

Tomorrow I start the front to include rank and pinion replacement.
