Is there is technique to shift from 4X4 hi to 4X4 low?

Read the Owner's Manual, it tells you.

If you don't have an Owner's Manual then here it goes
1.) Ensure your speed is no more then 2-3 MPH
2.) While still traveling at appx. 2-3 MPH, shift tranny to Neutral
3.) Manual T-Case: Grab 4x4 Shifter, and using firm, steady, pressure push it all the way up into 4 Low Lock, do not stop at Neutral
Weenie Electronic T-Case: Turn dial all the way to 4 Low Lock, light will flash until tranny is shifted back into Drive
4.) Shift into Drive and continue on your merry way

You will hear a grinding of gears with the Manual T-Case, it's normal and frankly I'd be worried if my T-Case didn't make a noise shifting into Low Lock

 

You should really be at a stop before shifting into 4LO..

I have the "weenie" electronic transfer case (AWD 4HI 4LO)

in order for me I can switch between AWD and 4HI on the fly any time...in order to get into 4LO i have to take a paper clip or something tiny to fit in that tiny "hole" to switch the transfer case into neutral and then into 4LO.

 

What do you mean AWD? I may not have noticed the AWD, but the only settings I have are 2WD, 4-HI, 4 LO, Neutral on the transfer case. Where do you find AWD?

2001 Durango and 2005 Ram Owners Manuals both say exactly what I posted. I had the Weenie Electronic T-Case in my Durango and shifted to 4-Low Lock exactly as I posted, went in to Low Lock fine. You should really be moving when shifting the T-Case it helps the gears to engage.

 

You might need to get your system checked. You should not have to do what you are describing to get your truck into 4lo.

 

Quite a lot of "differing opinion" on this one then guys.

I only asked, as there seemed to be a little stiffness getting the transfer box to change between modes. Also a sound of grinding gears, which if your not used to like myself, seems a little disconcerting to say the least.
My dad always said to me "don't force things son" and I've mostly found in life that he is correct.
Just didn't want to damage the transfer box.
Having just recently listened to another 4X4 engaging the tx box, mines quiet in comparison.

You only use the "paperclip" thing if you want to ---ENGAGE--- neutral for flat towing, such as in pulling behind an RV. If you want to switch to 4LO just turn the **** to 4LO. You can be going 150MPH if you want. It wont engage until the speed sensor sees the vehicle speed below 3-5 MPH Its quicker to stop, flip the switch, wait a couple secs, and go. Smarter too in my opinion.

I think only certain laramie models have the AWD feature. I like it...but it SUCKS gas with the hemi!!!!!!



BTW...yea i was wrong.....i can switch into 4LO when im doing 5mph or less......the pinhole is to engage the transfer case into neutral. never tried to switch into 4LO until yesterday after i read this post.
