Default Ram 1500 Tank Swap on a budget

Alright, so I went for a cruise about a month ago and after filling the tank a strap let loose. Well I pulled over to find the tank dragging and at that point the damage was done.

After two weeks of non stop searching and scouring the internet the only thing that fit my budget was at a local junk yard. For $150 I got to pull a 35 gallon tank out of a 02 Ram 2500 with what was a v10 under the hood... or what was a hood. The truck was totaled at 23,000 miles so it was basically almost new under what was left of it. The tank came with the sending unit and filler neck as I already knew I would need all this since the picks I took of the old tank basically told me it wasn’t going to be a direct bolt in swap.

So I got the “new” tank under the truck and here’s my to do list. Charcoal canister has to be pushed forward to accommodate the tanks length and one of the bed spines has to be cut out so the rear most part of the tank can fully seat up into position. Now my truck had a stock 32-35 gallon tank (I wanna say 35 cause when I ran it down to the gas light it took 34 gallons to fill)

Now for the straps. I bought a set of Dorman 1500 tank straps that would work “IF” it was the stock tank so now I gatta snag a pair of 2500 straps in order for the straps themselves to fit the dimensions/shape of the different tank. And a huge heads up here. If you do not move this tank and charcoal canister forward the rear diff and tank will get into a love match with each other. The fuel line connections and sender unit plug match up the same but they are in different locations. I don’t mind moving lines around and relocate things so really no hassle there. Anyway, I gatta go slice up my already rotten apart, deer marked bed to fit the tank so I’ll report back with my findings. Keep it minty!!

Interesting swap. Got any photos to share?

IIRC, the larger tank is a 36 gallon tank, but I could be wrong.

2nd generation long box was 35gallons, shorty was 34, why the 1 gal difference i have no idea but thats right out of the owners manual on a diesel, I assumed all gassers had the 26ish tank but i suppose the v10 would get a larger tank reffering back to my original comment i would assume

Yeah, my 98 has the 34 gallon tank....... It needs it to have any kind of reasonable range.

Default Long Time No Updates

Alright so I ended up welding up now straps out of some metal and old strap pieces I had laying around. Now after the one spine on the bed is cut out to clearence the tank a stock 1500 tank strap will fit like a glove. Now the front strap is where it gets a little fun. Now assuming not everyone has a welder I can say this. Your gunna need a 2500 front tank strap and some patience. Take that strap and bend it reverse so the mount hole faces the inside of the tank. It’s a lotta metal work but it’s the only way I got it to work. Once it’s all mounted up and the stud is through the hole in the strap the fun part of now using a wrench to secure it comes into play. Now if you got a wratchet wrench it speeds this up a ton but it’s the only way to get that nut fastened. Once that’s done just make sure you ain’t got and brake lines or cables binding with the tank (I got lucky) and if your all good then enjoy. And No this isn’t a permanent solution, when I get a new truck bed I’m slappin the right tank for my truck back in place. People look at me pretty awkwardly when I go to fill up and I hope in the bed and manhandle a filler neck that’s zip tied to the toolbox 😂😂
