Starter turns but engine will not start

Default Starter turns but engine will not start

06 Ram 1500 5.7 Laramie.

Parked in a local parking lot with engine running. As I was sitting there the engine sputtered and then died. Now it will not start. The started turns over but the engine will not run. Tried to check the codes using the key check but it did nôt show any......just some dashes followed by "done".

Not sure where to go from here. Any assistance or advice would be greatly appreciated.

check for codes with a scan tool. you can't flash codes thru a key check on a obdII vehicle...ie 96 and newer...you need a scan tool. if you have codes post them here.
-if no codes...the basic checks would be
-check for spark with a spark tester; if you have spark....
-check for fuel pressure;...if you have fuel pressure...
-check for injector pulse with a noid light. if you have noid…
-perform a compression test

sounds like crankshaft position sensor to me. Can't hurt to put a new one in, if you've never replaced it you're due anyway.

Starting off one step at a time to hopefully make this process as inexpensive as possible.

bought a code reader and it pulled the following codes: p0171 and p0174.

I replaced the crankshaft sensor about a year and a half ago but if it requires it I don't mind doing it again. I considered changing it this morning but decided to hold off until I checked the codes. Truck is sitting in about 2" of water and its pouring so not necessarily something I want to do unless I have to. Lol

The aftermarket sensors are known to fail. If it is indeed that, I would recommend a Mopar sensor, but not everyone can afford them.

if your scan tool has data stream view the cranksensor or rpm signal when cranking. cranking speed should be 200- 300 rpm.

the codes are fuel trim codes...lean iirc. spray 3 second shot of brake cleaner into the throttle body...if it briefly starts...you have a fuel supply problem.

Fuel Pump. Easiest to check, and the most likely culprit.
