Talking What do you guys think is going on here?

Hey people, im new to forums and new to trucks,

I just bought my first truck a week ago which is a 2005 dodge ram 4x4.

Everyone told me im an idiot for buying it because its older and i never worked with a wrench,

anyways

I just noticed today that my rear right wheel axle seal was leaking, probably because of the bearing went out

as i was down there i noticed fluid leaking out of the crack of what i think is the transmission where it connects

to the .... (I dont know what its called) anyways its freaking me out

probably should of listened to everybody i had this truck for a week and i dont want it to s$%t the bed.

To my untrained eyes, it looks like a seal or gasket that has failed.

What do you guys think? Any input on the matter is much appreciated!

The part behind the trans is the transfer case. (4x4 truck.) You likely have a seal going bad in either the rear of the trans, or the input hub on the t-case. T-case seal is easy to deal with, (once you have it out.....) trans seal? That one, I am not sure how much of an ordeal it is.

And looks like someone was already into that, given the still shiny grade 8 bolts. You gotta start somewhere, don't be shy about pulling things apart and repairing it.

That actually looks like a rear main, or pump seal. I believe that's the back of the oil pan I'm seeing. And the yolk where the front shaft attaches to the front diff. The pics are sideways.

Ooops. You are indeed correct. Guess I need to drink more coffee before I look at pics.

wash it off and monitor it for a while before you dig into it. a rear main seal is a pretty big job. Drive the truck for a while and make sure the engine and trans are ok before pulling a trans to change the rear main seal.
