Default bearing, ujoint, diff, other?

as noted in my other thread i was just gonna go ahead and replace front hubs on my 05 reg cab short box 5.7. 140,000 miles. started thinking about the symptoms and thought maybe its not the hubs?

just started doing this, i only hear/feel at 70mph+. i can hear a very mild humm and feel a very very light vibe in my feet.

i have no confidence in the tire in the air shake jiggle up down left right or same witn u joints, regardless i did it anyway and didnt feel play, to me this test will find only gross issues. i also spun the tires but i couldnt really hear much, again i wouldnt really expect to unless the damage was major.

tires have about 3,000 miles on them.

thoughts on how to better diagnose?

If you feel it thru the floor, but, not the steering wheel, likely the problem is in the rear drive line, not the front. Might try rotating the tires, just to see if anything changes.

today i moved the rear tires to the front, no change in sound at 70mph. the sound is cyclical, wer wer wer wer, very repetitive, the “wer” sound is about every 1/2 second or so.

i noticed a couple new things, not sure if they are related or different problems. unfortunately it was raining so it was a little tough to fully hear everything.

sometimes when slowly coming to a stop i can hear a cyclical tick tick tick sound, only when the brakes are lightly pressed, if i release the brakes the tick seems to go away. doesnt do it all the time and seemed to come from the back.

sometimes when going over a jarring bump i get a single mild clunk, similar to the sound of your hitch makes when it moves in the receiver. seems to be coming from the back and doesnt do it very often.

this is killing me, i hate this. im thinking of putting rear drive ujoints in since they arent expensive to do and i think originals are still in there.

thoughts?

When was the last time you had the rear axle housing cover off and serviced the fluid, and looked around in there? Do you have a limited slip diff?

Yea limited slip

dealer did fluid, bearings, clutch packs, ring and pinion 1 year ago (about 5000 miles ago). I had them do it 3 times cause i could always hear a differential howl at certain speeds, they never did get rid of the decel howl at 45mph - 35mph. I checked oil level, it is correct.

Does the frequency increase with vehicle speed, or engine speed? 2 or 4 wheel drive? One or two piece driveshaft?

Ill have to get back to ya on frequency, it doesnt start til 70 mph and i havent gone much over 75 since it started. It definitely is not a howl that ive heard diffs make.

4x4, 1 piece shaft, all stock

How's the fluid in the t-case look? Which t-case do you have? (should be a round tag on the back that will tell you.)

New ujoints in rear driveshaft, no change.

noise at 70 mph is difficult to tell what its doing with wind noise, maybe slight increase in frequency when accelerating and i think i can hear/feel when decel.

the tick tick tick when braking and i can hear at slower speeds decelerating, now i can hear it when brakes arent applied on decel only, slower speeds only.

3.55 diff.

Next step to take diff cover off and take a look?

If it's a bearing in the diff, likely you will need to disassemble things to find it....... Do you have another set of tires you can put on there? Just as a test?
