Default Looking at Getting a new Ram, need some input

Hey guys, just registered for the forum, looks like a great community for dodge owners . now to business, im looking at buying a new ram, and after seeing the new 06's, id like to try and get a deal on an 05. I would like a single cab 4x4 with either the 4.7 or the Hemi. The engine is where im a little stuck at, i really want the hemi, but i probally won't be towing hardly anything. basically what im trying to say is it worth the extra money to go with the hemi? im obviously aware that a 1500 with the hemi is going to cost more then the 4.7, but is the gas mileage drastically different? i know epa rates the 4.7 at 14 city and the 5.7 at 13 city.

Thanks a lot,
Alex

I don't think that the Hemi is the bad choice. The 4.7 is a good engine, but I personally think it is too small for a full size truck. One mpg isn't going to kill you and the Hemi has wayyyyyyyyy more power.

Welcome aboard!

A search here will address some of the questions you raise in detail. The short answer is that the 4.7 doesn't get all that better mileage than the hemi, especially under load where the former is constantly shifting looking for the correct gear for the conditions.

And, on a daily basis, not towing or otherwise "working"--the truck is HEAVY and it helps to have all the power possible to get it moving smartly. Also, the 3.92 limited-slip rearend is VERY useful.

Btw, if mileage is a significant issue, don't think of a full-sized truck, period. As world-renowned industrial designer Raymond Loewy was want to say regarding vehicles, "Weight is the enemy." And, I say, weight with insufficient power, doubly so! But hey, I'm a racer what else would I say, hum?

All the best!

mileage isn't too big of an issue, i was just wondering what the community thought...so i should look for one with the 3.92? just another question, but performance wise i would be interested in simple bolt on stuff for either engine. if i added an intake system, exhaust, and a power programmer with the hemi or the 4.7, am i looking at substantial results?

thanks a lot

Cat back, true long-tube headers (with metal-matrix, hi-flow cats), better flowing air-cleaner system, and tuning should equal about 30ish hp and 35ish #ft on a wheel dyno--or about 15% more than this increase on an engine dyno.

It's 100 hp for a 5000 lb truck. (Something like that anyway) Get the Hemi if you can afford it because without you might not have enough umph when ya need it!

Go for a test drive on both models.
It will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know and you won't be thinking and beating yourself up in the future about if you've made the right choice.........

Just my 2p worth. we don't have cents in the UK ha ha ha.

X2. Test drive every possible configuration you can find and shop at different dealerships. If they know there is competition they might be willing to kiss your rear a little more. I have the 4.7 base truck with the 3.73 rear end and 17" wheels. I think it's a good combo. I actually liked it better than the "fully loaded" one with the 20's but then I think electronics are best left in my recording studio or high end cars. IMO, a truck should be a truck not a computer........

BTW, my 4.7 averages 18mpg city/highway driving but it barely has 7k miles on it. Naturally it wont compare to a 5.7 in power - espically if you are getting a regular cab. Less weight.
