Default 2005 dodge ram 1500 4x4 making grinding noise front driverside

I was coming off the beach when the grinding started. Seemed like the front driver side tire locked up. But did not do it in reverse so I reversed off the beach got it towed home. Now that its home it does the grinding in 2wd goin forward but not reverse.i jacked her up took the axle out the hub free spins just fine the axle looks ok no metal shavings. But I got in it turned it on put it in gear and no noise with the axle off. Is it the axle or the yoke

Also should the tire spin freely when jacked up

The bearing is still the leading suspect. The axle stub shaft going thru it with the nut holds the bearing together. Take the nut off, and the bearing is no longer tight, so, yeah, it will turn easier, and be quieter. It will also fall apart if you try and drive it like that. (and you'll lose the tire on that side.... no fun at all.)

My 04 1500 made quite the loud grinding noise on the way home one day, then didn't return. After researching it, seemed to be a the bearing, so I replaced the bearing and never heard it again. I'd just replace the bearings, not a trivial thing to do - the knuckle is aluminum, the rest is steel... so corrosion typically fuses the bearing to the knuckle. There are a couple youtube vids that cover the job should you desire to do it yourself.

Shouldn't I still be able to free spin that axle when it's not in 4x4 or it shouldn't free spin

Something else should turn as well. There isn't an axle disconnect on that is there?
