What do YOU think about the 4.7
I had a 4.7L V8 in my Dakota with the 3.92 gearing...and it ran flawlessly. I never once had a problem. Ran so quiet half the time I had to gun the engine just to hear her purrrrr.
I've driven a few Rams in test drives with the 4.7L. They all seemed to drive okay, but I've never had to pull anything or haul anything in a Ram.
I hauled a lot of stuff in my Dakota....and I rarely had a issue with HP or torque. Great motor. Maybe not my 1st choice in a Ram, but definitely in a Dakota.

The Hemi might lose more HP, but it also has more HP to lose. I'm not making fun of the 4.7L, I'm just pointing out that they use the same 545-RFE tranny and I'd expect the percentage loss to be the same. Now if you are comparing the auto vs. 6spd, well, the manual has the edge in overall power transfer and least amount of HP lost.

these guys said it doesnt have the power of the hemi but it also doesnt lose as much power as the hemi does through the drivetrain

Hello,
Two weeks ago I purchased an '05 ST 4.7 5sp Auto 3.55 Axle Ratio (wanted a stick, none left, wanted a HEMI, none left, '06 too expensive.
)
I have a bit of HEMI envy (but my intention was to get a used truck (3rd vehicle for occasional utility use), ended up trading in my daily driver on a new '05, price was just too good. But now that this is my daily driver for 2 years it is feeling a bit sluggish), I digress... Anyway what can be done with the 4.7 to give it new life?
3.7 = 215 HP
4.7 = 235 HP
5.7 = 345 HP
I know the 5.7 is a completely different engine (Well, I think I know...), but the 4.7 seems to be a pretty weak improvement over the V6 considering the additional Liter of displacement. Is there a sleeping dragon there, or is it just a weak engine? My searches so far have only turned up chip mods for the HEMI, no superchargers or turbos that advertise compatibility with the 4.7. But then I'm new to trucks, and performance enhancements so may not be looking in the right places.
I've not seen much browsing through the forums here as to performance mods for the 4.7. What have folks done? What is available?

I just bought a new 06 1500, regular cab, 4.7L and I must admit....the engine runs very smooth and very quiet compared to the F-150 4.6L I previously had. Plenty of acceleration for me. As I never do any towing, I saw no need for the Hemi, especially now that it only comes with the 8/6/4 multi displacement. I am from the era when Cadillac tried that...and it was a nightmare. I like to stick to "simple" and proven.

As most people have said on here, the 4.7 is a very good, reliable, long lasting engine. It has proven itself as a truck engine time and time again. I used to drive a black SC Hemi for about 6 months, I decided I wanted the 4-door realized I didn't need the Hemi, so I opted for the 4.7 quad cab 1500, in Patriot Blue... What a truck!
Ok, new owner here. I have the 2005 Quad Cab 4.7 and want to know what bolt-ons you guys are talking about?
BTW, I love my truck. I have 6K miles on it, have taken it for several trips with the bike on a trailer for extended trips, and couldn't ask for a more fun truck!! It hauls just fine, and looks dang good going down the road!

I Just Traded My 05 Ram reg cab 4.7L in this past weekend for the 05 Ram 5.7L Quad cab and I never had any problems with the 4.7L. I would still have it if I werent looking to get a bigger trailer. My 4.7L had plenty of power and Pulled a 6x10 Trailer with 2 full size 4wheelers on it an one in the bed but I didnt think it would like pulling a 7.5x20 trailer so I opted for the HEMI, The difference is definately night and day, but if I werent pulling a larger trailer then I probably would of stayed with the 4.7L.
Chrysler has allowed the 4.7V8 to fall way behind in technology.
It needs a 'freshening'
with direct injection, twin sparkplugs, low friction bores and higher compression ratio.
But the 'bean counters' at DC are worried that improving the 4.7 would reduce the highly profitable 'take rate' of the 5.7
It costs DC $400 less to build a 5.7 at Satillo Mexico than a 4.7 in the USA,
and they charge $800 more for the 5.7 as an option
It costs less to build a 5.7 than even a 3.7V6
They have built over 1,300,000 Hemis at an increased cash flow of $1200 per engine.
The Hemi is the major reason DC is profitable, when you count the 'appeal factor' that helps sell additional vehicles.
The Hemi has a been a 'Money Machine' and those are DC's official words to financial analysts, not mine.

I bought my 02 Ram brand new with 17miles on it, now 4 years later i have almost 100k miles on it. I use it as my daily driver and i love it, it might eat more gas then my little hondas but its a v8. I try to do the normal 3k miles oil change but sometimes im so busy it takes up to 9k miles and its still ok. No probs with the 4.7l its a great motor. And I dont drive like a normal person neither, lets just say i dog the heck out of the engine. Everytime im at the light with someone that looks like they want some, i always gun it on them. You would be surpised to see the 4.7l can launch. So just to put my 2cents in the 4.7l is a great motor.
