What do YOU think about the 4.7
Before I got my '05 Ram, I had a '00 Dak (bought new) with the 4.7L engine. Ran flawless and had great low-end torque. I put 111,000 miles on the truck over 5 years, and it still ran as strong as ever when I sold it off.
My father has the 4.7L in his standard cab '03 Ram, and hasn't had any problem with it either.

Well, let's compare apples to apples.
First of all the 4.7 was created to take over for the venerable 5.2L motor that had been around for years with all the updates available for the time. It was a workhorse. I think Chrysler did a wonderful job at creating a mid size V8 that achieves good HP and torque numbers with its displacement.
It is very refined. NVH harmonics are lightyears ahead of the motor it replaced and better than most of its competition.
It is strong. Chrysler used a variety of relatively new techniques to insure the bottom and top end of the 4.7L are virtually bulletproof. It makes for a good motor to add forced induction.

I have the 4.7 in my QC 4x4 -- no complaints. If you want to race the fart rockets or do any serious tow/hauling, go for the Hemi. Mileage on either engine sucks, so don't let that be a huge factor.

What about the sludge build up at the oil filler. My uncle who is a mechanic for Chevy was telling me it was just a bad design and it was just water and oil build up and I should not worry about it. has anyone had this problem?

I think its a good motor, but it depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to BUY horsepower, then get a HEMI. But if you want a motor, that from what I understand, has alot of hidden potential with bolt-on parts, then go for the 4.7.
From what I read, the sludge problem was with the Durango's and was typically related to an intake gasket failure. I, personally, haven't heard of the sludge problem on a Ram, but I would definitely be curious to hear about it.

I have an 03 QC with the 4.7 and I have put just over 50,000 miles on it, and have changed the oil myself since day one, every 3k miles, and have never had 'sludge' in my filters. I use Mobil 1 5w30 Full Synthetic, and a K&N Oil & Air Filter. Has never let me down, and has got me through a bunch of tough situations. It is a great motor, revs hard, and pulls my 26ft camping trailor with ease.
