Default Humming/ growling from I think front end 2008 ram 1500 and tried everything I can thu

Sounds exactly like front wheel has b assembly so I replaced this low sounding irritating growl / humming sound with wheel hub assemblies on both front wheels - no change so I thought maybe one was bad so replaced both again with Timkend wheel hubs - no change

sound increases ( as in get louder) with speed and it don’t matter if truck in neutral or coasting down the road - turning left or right or under power or not makes no change - if truck not moving - no noise - if truck rear axle up on jack stands and put truck in gear and run it up to 90 we get no sound - if truck on ground and run in two wheel or e4 wheel drive sound is same in either set up

just got down replacing both front cv joints - also replaced seal and bearing and stub shaft on drivers side and seal, stub shaft and needle bearing that inside a second stub shaft on passenger side that comes from differential - no change

replaced all u joints on both driveshafts (front and rear driveshaft) and of front driveshaft disconnected it still makes sound

replaced passenger side upper and lower control arms and tie rods and ball joint and drivers side upper control arm and upper and lower ball joint and the bushing for the drivers bets side strut where connects to lower control arm - fluid in both pumpkins changed and no major metal filings found - just very fine stuff- transfer case fluid changed and all joints feel tight and smooth - moving tires front to rear and new set tires made no change -
seay bar bushing and links replaced 3 weeks ago

only thing ever had any problem with since 2008 was last year the seal dropped coupl drops rear ended fluid on rear end - so caught that right away and replaced but the nut for the driveshaft left little loose to me - the nut put on after seal and torqued to specs for none used crush sleeve and bearing - mute really where this all quite when up on jack stands and run up to speed - I stick bad

any ideas

I thinking on drivers side may replace lower control arm as maybe it’s making a resonating sound through one of bushings somehow - they look good but never been replaced unlike passenger side or maybe the struts resonating but no leaks or problems seen or felt with either side

tires are wearing normal and second set of new wheel hub bearing got less 3000 km on them

hopefully someone has some idea - where I got stuck is she got no howling or growling when tear on jack stands so that why I replaced almost everything on front in - none of the parts taken out were wore had but it is little quieter driving - just wish I could find it as got me drive crazy plus I soon have rebuilt old truck 😝

opem amd thankfully for any ideas

chris

Did you try rotating the tires even though you said they’re wearing good?

How long has the sound been heard?

How many miles in the tires? Some will get louder as they wear.

When you do hear the noise are you fairly positive it is coming from the front?
I know you said you couldn't hear the noise with rear jacked up. I have never had any luck using this method..possibly because there is no load on the bearing.
You have replaced alot of parts in the front end including bearings except internal differential bearings..
Again if it's possible the noise is coming from the rear and has the same rotational sound like a wheel you might consider looking at the rear axles bearings which unfortunately requires you to dump your gear oil. Just an idea

Sounds like the same sound I have in my 07 4X4.
First I am not driving in 4X4.
Mine does get louder when I turn, left or right, like when going around the on ramp to get on the freeway.
I have no idea where to start looking for an issue.
Think I will start by replacing the rear end fluid and looking inside the pumpkin

If it gets louder when you turn, the bearing on the OUTSIDE of the turn is failing. If it gets louder when you turn either direction, replace both bearings.

Jacked the front up and spun the wheels by hand.
Pass side front makes the growl sound, not very loud but it is there.
I'm probably going to do both hubs.

Just got home from Les Schwab.
Had them replace the Pass side Hub Bearing, price was not bad.
The guy did strip a bolt on my Brake Caliper bracket, but owned up to it and installed a brand new one.
Truck sounds much better, however I still have a touch of sound left.
I checked my axles and the Pass side seems to have more wiggle than the drive side at the axle stub.
How much play is normal?

Isn't this the $64,000 question! I just replaced mine, and there was a little bit of play with brand new parts. If I ever do this again, I will wrap teflon tape around the splines to try to shim out the play.

I would say if the chunky housing moves more than about 1/8" I would consider that a problem. Mine were moving about 1/2" before I replaced them.

I will video mine tomorrow and start a new thread, seems like about 1/2" or more.
But most 99% of the Growl is gone after the new Hub Bearing.

You need to replace both, not just one.
