Default Newly purchased 2002 ram 4.7 nv3500 trans. Makes a whining/growling noise when moving

The truck was a dui impound and sat for a year before I got it 193,000 miles. I changed the trans oil, it was definitely low in fluid less then 1 quart came out. But the noise is when I’m in motion with the clutch pedal released when I push it down it goes away instantly, the throwout bearing (I think) makes some noise when the truck is sitting still and the clutch pedal is not depressed but same thing when I push the pedal it goes away.

the noise isn’t a grinding so much as like something rotating rubbing together almost, this is the first manual I’ve ever owned so I’m kinda new. It drives good besides the noise changes gears good, I haven’t drove it a lot since I bought it but so far so good besides the noise.

also when I was coming in tonight I heard a noise under the truck and there was a vacuum line by the fuel pump unhooked, it had a hose clamp on it like it went somewhere vs a vent when I plugged it the truck died. I’m gonna look into that more tomorrow

Wonder if it IS the throwout bearing...... and putting pressure on it pushes things together enough to make it stop.

well I got tags on it today I’ll be driving to work and back atleast. Still driving good. I think I’m just gonna buy a clutch kit and all the possible bearings and pull it and replace them all. My question as this is the first manual I’ve ever worked on. What comes in a clutch kit? And who makes a good one. The trans was dry when I got it home and changed the oil but the thing sat for a year, and like I say it shifts good I mean no real issues besides the noise.

but would the throwout bearing make a greater noise when the truck was in motion? And if it was the trans itself wouldn’t the noise continue to some extent when I pushed the clutch pedal.

im just praying the trans isn’t about to explode on me lol

If the noise changes/stops when you put some pressure on the clutch, then it likely is the throwout bearing. Clutch kit will have clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearings. You will want to scuff the surface of the flywheel as well. I haven't done a clutch in a couple decades.... so, I am not sure who the good ones are any more.

thanks man. I realized my natural vacuum leak detection assembly is broken and basically unhooked. I need to replace it but jesus it’s a little expensive lol, $150 trucks still running but I’m sure that’s not helping. The nipple where a line goes on is broken off

For a broken vacuum nipple, buy a new threaded nipple and use a tap to cut some threads in what's left.

what exactly do you mean scuff the surface Of the flywheel? I’m completely new to working on manual trans, driven them a lot but never owned em

Sand it down some. Just hit it with some 120 grit, and clean the surface nicely. Technically, you are supposed to take it off, bring it to a machine shop, and have them throw it on a milling machine, but, automotive machine shops aren't nearly so plentiful (or quick) as they once were.

another issue I’m running into is idk if I need to buy an 11 or 12 inch clutch, orielys has a clutch kit in stock and all they show for the truck is 12 inch clutches, but autozone shows 10 inch clutches, and advanced shows 11-7/8 and an 11-5/8 but rock auto shows 11 inch. I don’t want to buy the wrong thing but I gotta buy something soon like tomorrow lol
