Default shift solenoid testing

Has anyone ever tested / troubleshoot their shift solenoid? I just took it out and I want to test it before I buy a new one. ($300) What is the easiest way to test the shift solenoid outside of the vehicle?

Its an '05 4.7 ram 1500. It's been shifting erratically & intermittently at low speeds. The shift solenoid is the 1st thing I want to test. Has anyone done this test outside /dismounted from the vehicle? I don't own a fancy OBD2 that gives me all the breakdowns in systems. Just a basic one and I also have a regular multimeter. Can I use a 9V batt, leads & multimeter to test this thing?

Do you know what the P codes are. If you don't have any codes. It maybe as simple as a upgrade on the controller. If you have P codes then you would use a DVOM to test the circuits.
