Hello all, Well I finally put a gauge on my oil pressure after thinking it was the sending unit. I have 0 pressure at idle when heated up. Going down the road it's great.
What am I in for? Will I have to take the engine out?
Thanks.
What engine and what type of oil have u been using? Pull the oil pan and see if the pick up is blocked. Also a valve cover. If clogged, you can try a bottom end kerosene soak, then run motor flush a few times.
Unlikely that you'll need to remove the engine. Your problem is likely blockage or bad oil pump.
I second dodgevity's suggestion to remove the valve cover. If there is oil there and it is clean then I would suspect oil pump. If you see large sludge buildup then your pickup is probably blocked and galleries need cleaning.
Is truck running good, no valve clatter?
My approach to this would be that I want to see oil coming to the heads. I would pull one plug from each cylinder, pull fuel pump fuse, disconnect the coils, and remove the valve cover from the passenger's side. I'd have a friend turn the starter while I watch oil come to the head. But that's me and not necessary to fix your problem and mentioned for your consideration.

I'm running the 4.7 with 111,000 miles. It's 2005 now I have had the truck for about 4 years with this problem and no noise coming from valves and it runs well. When I change the oil I have no problems for a few hundred miles, the gauge won't even go to low pressure.

Suggest you switch to full syn which tends to coagulate a lot less than conventional. The 4.7 has smaller oil galleys, ports & passages than say a 5.9.
Since you say the problem temporarily subsides right after an oil change, that tells me that you probably want to run a thinner oil right now for the simple fact that it will flow better. 5W-20 has been the dealer fill for the 4.7 for a very long time. You can get quality synthetics at Walmart for about $20 for the big jug. A thinner oil can also drop your oil pressure (again due to flow) but your lack of pressure is likely due to starvation. I measured oil pressure with a gauge back when I started using 0W-20 and was way above nominal pressure.
