Default 46re knocking (5.9 magnum)

Hello, I’ve done as much research as I can so I’m hitting a wall as I’m posting here as my last resort.

I have a newly rebuilt 46re(no more than 30 miles) paired with a 5.9 magnum. Loud knocking from bell housing in every gear besides park unless I rev it up to about 3k RPM. Pulled motor and inspected flex plate, TQ bolts and dust shield. No issues there.

Does anyone have any ideas?

If you remove the torque converter bolts, and push it back so it isn't being driven by the engine, does the noise go away?

I’m not sure, I removed the engine to check the flywheel because I could not see well enough from the dust shield. I’ve inspected the flywheel and there is no damage. I have a feeling it’s the torque converter but it is new.

Just because it is new......

Who did the rebuild? Did they also install it? (if it wasn't you. )

a local transmission shop. I did the install, no different than any other install I’ve done before. I’m leaning towards it being a bad TC. I’ve never bought a new part and it not work so I’m stumped but I know it happens and from my research it’s possible with a TC. It’s kind of an expensive “Hope” if you will but I have no other choice. I’ve inspected everything and everything seems great. The noise was absolutely coming from the bell housing.

Does the knocking change in intensity/frequency with rpm? Usually you cannot install the trans if the convertor isn't properly indexed into the pump. If the trans is out, I'd look into the pump drive lugs and make sure one isn't missing or something... I had a 727 I put into an old muscle car that had a pump lug missing... What brand convertor is it?

Yes. The knock will change with rpm.
park - no noise until 3k RPM
1234 - all the time
N - always
