I mentioned keeping my truck for a while unless I come across a screaming deal on a heavier truck. That got me to thinking (and my head hurts too!). The 5.9 Cummins is a good solid engine with just a few warts like the Killer Dowel Pin. How good are trucks with later Cummins engines? My current Ram 1500 tows just fine but if I get a goose neck or fifth wheel trailer, the short bed will cause issues. I'm in no hurry as just about every system has been gone through on mine. So, for future reference, I'm [icky and want to pick the brains of the collective.
What are the better years?
Best engine/transmission combination?
Least rust prone body set ups? (A former coworker had an '03 that fell apart fast from rust.)
I'm in no hurry. My truck will be my daily driver once it's done. Especially once the Mazda goes into the body shop to fix the attack Deer damage.
I am a big fan of the 12 valve fellers. (pre-98) LOT less to go wrong there. Of course, they suffer from dodge rot as well. Find one from a southern state, and tin worm will be a lot less of an issue.
Depends. If you want simplicity get a 12 valve, If you want power I recommend the common rail 5.9s, I recommend both with the manual transmission. As for rust any older truck is going to rust, get a southern rust free truck Just make sure to wash and wax the body often. If you take care of these they will take care of you.

I'm a fan of the 12 valves myself. Unfortunately, all the 12 valves around here have been cranked up. I know a couple with twisted frames from pulling. My Ram had a little rust and I fixed all of it before I painted it except for a soft spot in the cab floor. I'm right on the edge of the rust belt. 50 miles north, trucks dissolve. 50 miles south the paint gets sun burnt with surface rust. My truck pulls okay, I pulled a trailer with a flat tire 20 miles before someone got me to pull over.
