Hey all!
I have a 2005 Ram 1500 with 235,000 miles. Runs pretty well overall, however she failed inspection due to a leaking waterpump (and some exhaust stuff). I installed said pump a few years ago, I figured I'd tear into it and check gasket on the waterpump, see if she needs replacing... I also figured I'd check the timing chain while in there, I've heard around this mileage is good time to change it. So I embarked, mostly smooth job so far, the timing cover gasket was trashed so looking forward to replacing that thing. I dropped oil pan to check pickup tube (and get oil pump off), all seem very good to my untrained eye... its almost disappointing. I'll attach some pictures of timing chain. I have resolved to replace the timing chain, gears, and tensioners. I have read that the tensioners from the 6.1 hemi's fit and are better? Is that a thing? Any recommended direction as far as which product to buy I would appreciate. I might just bite bullet and get MOPAR chain kit.
Thinking I'll replace the oil pump too... I've read that the high volume pumps are better... is this true? I have tried to keep the truck as stock as I can over the years. If you guys tell me to get the high volume, I'll do it.
Left (PS) tension. This was right when cover came off. Is this worn or still good? Right (DS) tension
Internal crank/cam only timing chain on a 2005, can only be a 5.7. The only other two ½ ton engines available are OHC engines and have a pair of chains that go up to the head.
