Hey everyone- I have a 2005 dodge ram 1500 with 5.7 hemi. So I have all the parts I need for this timing chain swap, I just wanna verify all is well with engine position before I change the chain. It helps to type it out and maybe I've done something wrong and y'all can catch me before I blow it. I have seen some videos and read the manuals and it seems that IF you can verify the markings on the cam sprocket position is 12:00 and the marked crank sprocket position is 6:00 AND that the #1 cylinder is top dead center (I used borescope through #1 plug hole - #1 being driver-side closest cylinder to radiator) THEN the chain markings are irrelevant upon removal? I just don't want to rotate engine ad nauseam until chain lines up also - fun question though... How many full engine rotations would that actually take?? If I have to line the chain markings up too I will, I just want to same myself the trouble of removing spark plugs and clicking her around and around. Thanks for any help - attached are some photos of the positioning first one is a bit washed out where the cam marking is, but shes at 12 high noon. Crank sprocket is marked with black ink, also a bit hard to see.
Not sure if the hemi has the dots on the gears or not, can't tell from the pics, but, I like to have the crank gear dot at 12, cam gear dot at 6, as closely aligned as I can get em, and just swap the chain and gears leaving everything in the same place, and making sure my dots still line up properly. Doing it that way, it simply doesn't matter which cylinder is in firing position.....
