Default Checking odometer

Can you check a used truck to see if the miles are correct. If so is this something a dealer could do. Looking At buying a used truck from another state from a private seller and want it inspected.

There should be a way, but I would assume a dealer would have that device.

im pretty sure the mileage is stored in the instrument cluster itself. if you go buy a new instrument cluster and put it in your truck the cluster will read 0 miles because its new, same as if you buy a cluster from salvage it will read whatever the mileage on that truck was.

im thinking youd have to take it to the dealer ... they are the only licensed entity that holds a machine that is made to change mileage on a computerized odometer... unless the PCM changes it automatically but almost postive it doesnt... they have that machine just for the purpose... if im wrong guys..slap me and i think is a federal offense to sell or deal a car with the incorect mileage reading on the odometer... so its seriously something youd have to look into

Millage can be altered.
I had an 03 QC Hemi imported to the UK and the difference between the CarFax report and the actual millage when I recived the truck, was about 10,000 miles.
Yeah I know THAT SUCKS !!!!! BIG TIME !!![:@]
Don't know where the error ocurred, but I would think it happend States side, as equipment to read the electronics and stuff here in the UK is almost non existant.
So..........be carefull my friend and for piece of mind, get that CarFax report. They only need your VIN number and you can do it on-line at http://www.carfax.com/

Best regards Al.

One mileage check at the last dealer who serviced the truck, reported it at a higher figure, than the truck has now..................

You do the math [sm=bangbang.gif]

The correct mileage can in fact be checked!!!! The PCM stores the actual miles the truck has seen. This is done to keep dishonest people honest. This mileage has to be accessed by the dealer, unless of course you happen to have the diagnostic equipt. they have.
I'm sure it will most likely cost you the diagnostic hook up. But if you have any doubts about the honesty of the seller, this is how it is checked concerning the stated mileage

the odometer will only show the mileage the body control module has stored. even if you were to replace your odometer with a new or used one the mileage would reflect what the module has stored not 0 miles or whatever miles the used one had on it. the only way to get a different mileage would be by replacing the module.

Gotta be a way of "flashing" the oddo reading in the PCM then............[sm=badidea.gif]

Not that I want to, as I know it has happened to me.
