Default 2006 Ram transfer case?

Anybody know what the benefit would be to spend the extra $400 to get the ON Demand transfer case versus the standard one?

If this means the Transfer Case with "AWD" in the place where "2WD" SHOULD be, then my opinion is no its not worth it. If its an AWD transfer case, I would not get it for a few reasons. First, its not going to help your fuel economy, most likely it will hurt it (not much though). Second, If your like some other people here that I call "Auto enthusist's" then there might be times where you want to goose the throttle and fish tail the rear a little, or do a burn out once in a while. With "AWD" you will not be able to do this no matter how hard you try. I've driven a few at the Proving Grounds, and you can be on a slippery snow covered road, or gravel road, and gun the throttle, and very little tire spin will happen. Just my $.02

The On the Fly has a front axle dissconnect to help with gas mileage. The on-demand I believe will not have this feature. from what I have expirenced, the on-demand can ,at times, engage hard, like when your rear tires are slipping and the fronts engage, "on-demand", on dry pavement, it will engage very hard and could damage the system. very rare I'm sure, but it could add extra wear on the system.
just a thought

Stick with the selectable 2wd and 4hi/lo. It is less to go wrong, relatively. That $400 can be better spent elsewhere as mentioned. You will also lose on the MPG end and add to an already abysmal MPG that we're getting now without the AWD.

Depends on where you live. In the north east and midwest, its nice in the winter, AWD has a great sure footed feel to it on slick surfaces. If you dont drive on snow covered pavement that much, then its NOT worth it. Peace Murf

The only thing that kills me with the on the fly electronic transfercase is the time it takes to get it locked. You have to idle around and listen for it to lock and then you can go where as the old floor shift, you could shift and go. I would not go for AWD 'cause then you loose the ramish feel. Well, I think it would.

It's a waste of $400. It was designed for people like my wife who can't figure out how to shift a lever when the roads are slick.

A little harsh, but true. They mainly use AWD in audis and subarus, mainly for performance. part time is for trucks 'n stuff like that.
