Default Question for Power Wagon Owners

Hello All,
I have a 2004 2500 4X4 QC Hemi. I currently have 3.73 gear ratio. I am ready to swap the ring and pinions out. I have done a ton of research on the available ratios. I can change to 4.10 or 4.56 ratio out of the Power Wagon. My questions are for Power Wagon owners. How is your fuel mileage? I am currently getting 8.5 MPG. I live in the Northeast and live 4 miles from work, so I do not go far unless my 7,500lbs Camper is hooked on. Do you tow with your Wagon? How does it come out of the hole? Did you drive a different Ram with a different ratio prior to your purchase?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Default RE: Question for Power Wagon Owners

Hi, I have an 05 Power Wagon, I get 11-12mpg city 13-15mpg highway, I tow 6-8k lbs for work and I have no problem. The Hemi Launches the Truck!!! It's surprised How Fast it is..weighing 7000lbs..I blew a mustang away at a light the other day
I have an 03 Quad Cab 1500 2wd 4.7L so I never towed as much with it. But that little truck is pretty fast too. gets about 13-15 city, and 17-19 highway.
Why are you getting taller gears? Are you putting on bigger tires? or just after the mileage? I would recommend 4.10s if your leaving stock tires on..better highway mileage.. And don't forget to adjust your Speedo! I think you would need to reprogram the tranny shift points if you go with the 4.56's but with the 4.10's it would be pretty close you might get away not having too?

The Wagons do come with the 4.56 ratio. I am going with a lower gear to try to get a little more out of the truck while towing my camper. My truck pulls it fine, but I want it to come off the line faster. I am not changing tires. My truck very rarely goes on the highway unless my camper is hooked on. I have put 10,000 miles on in two years, so MPG is not really a big issue to me. I checked into changing the gear ratio in the PCM and found out it is not necessary. The Rear ABS sensor reads a tone ring in the rear end and figures out your vehicle speed regardless of the ratio.

Thanks for the info Anthony!

I guess I don't understand. You had the 4:56's (stock) and went down to a 3:73? A lower gear will be numerically larger - ie: 4:56's to 4:88's. The 4:88's are the lower (taller) gear. A higher gear will be numerically smaller - ie: 4:56's to 3:73's. The 3:73's are the higher (smaller) gear. Are you thinking going to a smaller gear in a 7k, 4WD truck will give you better gas mileage? All you're going to do is shoot yourself in the foot. You mileage will decrease more as will your towing capacity and the overall "grunt" of the truck. If your going to lower gears, I think 4:56's are you're only option.

I have a 2004 SLT with stock 3.73 Gear Ratio.
I want to go to either 4.10 or 4.56 ratio for better towing.

That makes more sense, because you titled this post "Question for Power Wagon Owners." That lead me to believe you had a Power Wagon (2500 Hemi, with 4.56's, winch, sway bars, etc). But, now I understand you have a regular SLT. Sorry.

Glad I could put my two cents in..
Anyone interested in starting a 4x4 Club for the New Power Wagons? ( I guess we could let the Older Power Wagons Play too... I have a 64 Town Wagon Power Wagon..318, 4spd, PTO Winch all stock, my beater until I can restore her! )
If your interested let me Know... I live in San Luis Obispo, Ca..Right next to Pismo Beach. I will be at Terra Del Sol on march 3-6, if anyone else wants to bring their Power Wagon out to Play !!

When the truck was new, I got around 12.5 mpg. Now, anytime I have it out, it's play time. Last tank was 11.7 mpg, with only 1300 miles on it, but that includes a lot of hard throttle and 4wd use. I would say half the miles on the last tank were on dirt and/or in 4wd.

As for towing, I towed a 5000# enclosed all over MI for a day. No drama, plenty of power.
