Was I Stupid?
I just got a deal on a set of 3.92 gears from Ebay. They came off a 99 Ram 1500. They appear to be in pretty good condition. I have 3.55's in my truck now, that only have 3000 miles on them. I am running the stock 17's right now but will eventually go to 20's. I was told if I stick with the 3.55's and go to 20" rims the truck will run like a dog. (I KNOW, SHOULDA BOUGHT THE HEMI IN THE FIRST PLACE). Is it stupid to put used gears in a new truck or should I cut my losses and spring for a new set of 4.10's which is what I really wanted, but the deal on the 3.92's was too good to pass up. Please any feedback will be appreciated.
No problem buddy, thats what we're here for, to help each other with stuff. Are you installing the gears yourself, or getting a mechanic to do it? Also, keep in mind if you have a 4x4 you need a set for the back and a set for the front of your will majorly mess up your front differential. hah, thanks for the compliment I'm sure she'll be happy. She hates that picture though, I dragged her out of bed and made her go pose with the trucks lol, she wasnt feeling well but she did it to amuse me anyways lol.
No it is not a 4x4, I would never arttempt to do it myself. You need a lot of specialized measuring tools and torque wrenches . The shimming has to be perfect otherwise they make a horrible Whine. I will have a mechanic do it. There are a lot of performancer shops here in Ft. Lauderdale. I can have it done for around $185 or so. I have to convince the wife the truck sucks so she will let me make another Mod. She is already pissed for all the money I spent on my Motorcyle now I have a new obsession. She is gonna kill me. Make sure it is a matched set. I'm not for putting used gears in anything as the wear patterns are already set. You'll probably be fine, but I'd get a second opinion on putting used gears in your truck. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but perhaps a mechanic that deals with diffs on a daily basis will chime in and give more enlightening advise. Good luck with the wife as I know how that can be...
