Default Dodge Rams equipped with Sentry Key

how do you tell if yours has it???

just wondering because I want an alarm installed, but the guy is telling my I need this special interface....he hasn't even seen my keys or the inside of my truck. I think he presumes I have some sort of "chip" or something that requires bypassing for the remote start.

Go to http://www-5.dodge.com/webselfservic...m%28%27R%27%29 and send them an email. They can use your VIN to tell you everything that came with your truck when it was new. They responded to me within 24 hours.

Mine has the Sentry Key feature.

Get a regular key cut (which you can keep in your wallet), then try to start your truck and drive away. If it keeps running, then you don't have it.

There is a red light on the cluster that flashes also after locking the doors with the remote or with the door lock switch after key off.

There are two parts to the sentry key system. The first part is the key has a transponder chip in it. This chip is needed to start the truck. Without the chip, the truck will start and then shutoff and disable the engine. The next option is a alarm that works in tandem with the sentry key system. The transponer key system alone is a pretty hi-tech anti theft system alone. The optional alarm guards the contents in your truck.

the keys look the same, only difference are the keys with the transponder are grey as hemistyle said.

the black keys are non sentry. the key fob has nothing to do with the key sentry, it only unlocks the door and disables the the alarm. . .sometimes[:@]

I have an 06' Ram with the Sentry Key. I had an aftermarket alarm/remote start installed and they had to bypass my Sentry Key system. Make sure you get an alarm installed at a place that you trust. There is a lot of work done in the electrical system. I had a friend install it that works at a stereo shop and watched him do it. He explained it all to me as he installed it and installed the relays that had to be used. But, getting back to the Sentry Key thing, my key doesn't look like yours. I don't know if you have the Sentry system installed.

What year do you have? 2002-2005 the key is gray, and fat. 2002-2005 flat black key is non SKIM. 2006, it is still possible to have a gray key, but Chrysler packaged the remote keyless entry such that you save money over just getting SKIM only. In 2006, the RKE Fob was replaced with a key that has the transmitter and SKIM incorportated into it.
