Default Caught on fire!

I have a 97 1500 4x4, my son stopped to put gas in it yesterday shut it off, went into the store and a lady came running in and told him that it was on fire. He ran out and grabbed a fire extinguisher and put it out before the fire dept. got there, but it burnt the wiring harness, the air cleaner and God only knows what else. Any ideas what caused this? To make matters worse....I DROPPED my full coverage insurance because it was so expensive with adding a 17 year old. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Are you sure you're not talking about the F-150's...

Are you sure your son did not toss a cigarette or something. Is he telling you the WHOLE story?

The truck is approaching 10 years, so god knows what has transpired over the years that could have led to the fire. Electrical changes, fans added, radio system. Wireing harness coming loose and laying against a hot part of the engine. Aftermarket parts, CAIs, whatever installed incorrectly. Like I said over 10 years anything could have happened to help this fire occur. Only way to find out is to have a mechanic look at the evidence.

Most likely an oily/greasy engine and a bad plug wire.

I would check to see if there were any recalls from '97 to present on that vehicle that could cause any problems. Might be ignition problems or any other millions of problems.

Since the wires are that bad, I'd guess a wiring problem that wasn't fused properly. Were there any electrical additions to the truck like horns, audio/video, lights, etc??
