what to put for better fuel millage?
The "reason" why DC doesn't include any mods on their vehicles is because they have to meet certain critiria and specs in order to release it to the public so they limit the performance and sound of the vehicle to appeal to the average customer.>>>>>>>
The muffler sound I understand, and the speed restrictors I guess I kinda understand, I'm not debating a person can't invest a lot of time and money to get major HP gains but this thread has more to do with MPG then performance. I've yet to find anyone on these forums to suggest anything more then a 1.5-2 MPG gain or about 10% changing exhaust and intake. I'd argue that a person might be less inclined to lay off the accelerator if they had these mod's done so any MPG gains might be offset by behavioral differences. Behavior and maintenance are probably bigger factors over the long run then performance modifications IMO. Doesn't matter what you do to the engine, for every 5 mph you go over 65 MPH your MPG begin to deteriorate quickly. In the exhaust system I'm willing to bet the catalytic converter is the biggest nemisis. Did you know a Honda Accord can pass a smog test without a converter? LOL, FWIW.

The resistor in the IAT wire (PowerWire)
is easy to take on and off.
The problem with knowing whether fooling the IAT can increase MPG
is that most owners so far have only reported
what their next tank of gasoline gave for MPG.
Even if a mod does nothing
you have a 50/50 chance your next MPG check
will be slightly higher or slightly lower.
A better way (but unfortunately much longer) to test
would be to plug in the PowerWire for a tank of gasoline
then take it out for the next tank of gasoline
then put it back in, etc,
for about 4 tanks with
and 4 tanks without.
It is very important to alternate the mod this way
because most trucks improve MPG as they "break in"
due to piston ring tension dropping and carbon deposit raising compression ratio.
If you are in a hurry
a 'Two Truck SAE/TMC Type 4 MPG test'
would give you a highly accurate answer (2% margin of error) in a day or two
but would require you to burn off 4 tanks of gasoline
and keep 2 people busy for several hours.
A few years ago when the 'crankshaft position sensor slot' mod was the current fad
someone posted a pretty good MPG test that claimed a 0.4 MPG gain.
The CPS slot mod gave about a 3-4 degree timing advance or retard.
Since nearly all modern engines
have timing set retarded from 'mean best torque'
{and the 5.7 reportedly was calibrated on 89 octane and 90 degree F air temperature}
it is at least possible that a slight gain could be found,
although most experts say that increasing sparkplug gap is a more reliable way to see a gain
because it gives a double benefit of 'fast burn'
plus advances when peak cylinder pressure occurs (which is like ignition advance).
Ram owners who
*use a PowerWire
*advance the timing
*widen the sparkplug gap
*install a SuperChips
should acknowlege to themselves the risk that
(especially in Summer on hot dry days)
they might get too close to the edge
and one of the eight cylinders will detonate
and a piston ring land might fail - which will mean a new $2200 shortblock.
It might be good insurance to do all experimenting using 96 octane Sunoco or similar gasoline.

Now that you have LOST on the AIR RAM induction system Flame... you have chosen to attack our POWER WIRE... I’m sure the =JET=STREAM=> scoop is next on your list of attacks… Aren’t there other products out there that perhaps you really should be focusing your energy on? Ones that really are not worth the material they are made out of? How about, throttle body spacers, tornados swirl thingy’s, fuel line magnets.
If our products did not work, we would not be here today. The reason those other products I mentioned above do in fact sell is due entirely because they market to millions of people promising better fuel economy... 3 out of 10 may return teh product as they truly do nothing.... the other 7 will keep them... that’s worth millions because they where able to reach such a HUGE audience. I hate to brake it to you hank... but I don’t have the advertising budget those big CROOKS have... all our advertising is word of mouth... and if you study up, you will learn that we in fact follow through in each of our claims... If we didn’t we would not be here today with such a forceful backing from our customers. You know it as well as I do that =AIR=RAM=> customers back up our products... NON-=AIR=RAM=> owners just sit around and NAYSAY... Like yourself. If our products where as you try to make them look then you would have past customers backing you up… WHERE ARE THEY? The only ones that bad mouth our products are the ones who don’t use them… Interesting FACT hank isn’t it?
LOL but now since you have LOST on the AIR RAM induction system Flame... you attack our POWER WIRE... But thank you for advertising one of its key features... PLUG & PLAY in seconds.
Hank this is NOT a new "Trick" and it has been in use since the 60's on distributor equipped vehicles.. I guess since you have never turned a wrench you did not know about the benefits of advancing the timing 3-4 degrees... its never too late to learn.
LOL... as much as you would like to deseive people into thinking the =POWER=WIRE=> does nothing.... Your an @$$ for thinking so. You see your trying to catigorize the POWER WIRE with your list of GADGETS. The thing is the POWER WIRE actually causes the PCM into advancing the timing 3-4 degrees so it changes the timing advance curve... the other mods on your list did NOT alter timing curve.
And your results would be improved fuel economey with the POWER WIRE installed. Try as hard as you like hank... the POWER WIRE does in fact advance the timing and in doing so it does in fact prove to be worth 1-2MPG under a light foot. This is a FACT not an opinion.
LOL.. your such a wise man.
Umm Yeah thats what we all want to do when gas prices are throught the roof as it is... Hank 99% of your advice for ANYTHING is impratical to say the least.
What was it timing advance or retard.... Either Your off track once again... Hank there is a HUGE difference between TIMING ADVANCE and MECHANICAL ADVANCE. So what exactly are you trying to say here? You have gone way off subject once again.
LOL WTF are you talking about? Since when has RETARDING the timing make "BEST TORQUE" on a Naturally aspirated engine? The ONLY time you want to retard the timing is if your under boost... Hank you do NOT know what your talking about... you are WAY WAY WAY out in left feild...
Well hank... this is where your LACK of knowledge shines through. The 2003-Up 4.7L & 5.7L both have knock sensors that will detect knocking. Then knocking is detected the PCM will retard the timing to protect the engine. The fact is, the POWER WIRE has proven to produce the greatest gains in the hotter weather. And since the POWER WIRE causes the PCM to add 2.5% more fuel @ WOT the additional octane helps keep things stable...
Well honestly Hank, its funny how you would quote Dodge3471 when his views back up your opinions, you use his name to make your points day in and day out as you praise and idolize his every post. You where quick to point out his credentials above and praised him for his extensive back ground….then why would you now not trust his educated views now? He FULLY backs up the “POWER WIRE†as a GREAT mod and he even recommends it daily to people… But now that his view on the POWER WIRE doesn’t back your twisted views are you saying he is NOT qualified now? Really Hank you have done NOTHING but dig a hole this entire tread.

AirRam,
even when I cut a long (but good) article down to a paragraph
you still won't read it carefully.
Here's what David Vizard said,
cut to less than a sentence:
"The system has a tuned length from the filter to the plenum...."
Yes the 5.7 (and 4.7) have tuned, harmonic chambers from the filter to the plenum.
You and I both know that you don't understand this,
and you don't know
how you have changed them....either good or bad...high or low rpm.
As to Dodge3471 posts on how the PCM and the knock sensors work,
I have read those.
You should read them again,
pay special attention to words like 'authority'
and 'window'
and 'retard table'
It will be good for you AirRam.
...and I wonder where Dodge3471 boss's boss went to engineering school?
here's a hint...

Harmonics or not, dyno tests show improvments with a CAI over the stock intake system on just about every system out there. Some are better than others, but most are better than stock, when it comes to performance anyway. Some of the articles that Hank has posted have been interesting and make for good reading, but I do know from experience that more air in and more air out equals more horsepower, and less load on the engine equals better fuel economy. I realize that DC has spent tons of money developing their engines, just like every other manufacturer has.
I work in the motorcycle business, and yes the company's, just as DC does, spend hundreds of thousands of dollars developing exhaust systems to produce peak power all throughout the power band of their engines, however, small improvments to certain areas develope more power, over factory set-ups. I myself have built numbers of performance engines and so far with my 3rd gen ram, have seen nothing but improvment everywhere with each thing that I do. Improvments in power, and improvments in fuel economy.
I feel that this long bashing thread is useless. Hank, you have nothing to prove, and AIR RAM has already proved to have a system that produces more power, and shows better mileage. If you disagree, just ask the hundreds of 3rd Gen Ram owners that have purchased his product. BTW AIR RAM, I am interested in getting a Power Wire, what is the wait on one if I ordered tomorrow morning. (MONDAY)

BigBluRam,
Since you are soon considering doing two mods in the future:
4.56 gears
PowerWire
Would you do a favor to DodgeForum members
and keep some careful records
before and after the mods?
Perhaps record 4-5 tanks of gasoline before, and
maybe do a test drive at a steady 60 mph on a highway
on a day where you record the temperature and wind direction?
Dragstrip runs before and after would be interesting too
especially if weather conditions are recorded.
You notice that stump_breaker,
one of the previous posters (who likes AirRam personally)
reported truthfully that he did not see a MPG increase after 4.56 dif gears
but likes the hill climbing and acceleration.
That is similar to what Dodge reported to the EPA.
The 4.56 dif gear equipped Power Wagon used more fuel
than a similar 3.73 2500 series Ram
in the 50,000 mile long emissions equipment durability test
that must be done by DCx with their employees on their track
and then reported 'on the honor system' to the US Gov
It is too bad that Dodge does not put a 4.56 as standard equipment in the Daytona 1500 Ram.
I think Daytona Ram owners would be pleased with the acceleration
and everyone would benefit from having an official City/Highway MPG to look at.
DCx has not done something like that on the Daytona or older Indy Rams because
it would have hurt their C.A.F.E. score for that year. If DCx exceeded its CAFE level
a large fine had to be paid. This law was recently changed.
{although if you do a search you will see that I am no admirer of how the EPA does MPG tests
and neither are the engineers who work at the EPA's Research Triangle lab in Durham NC}
