Aside frome the life span are there any advantages to the Iridium plugs? A friend of mine used to drag race a 68 Nova for years and told me not to waste my money.

A friend of mines brother switched his Dakota to Iridiums and within a short time the "check engine" light started coming on.

The HEMI's of this day and age have 2 spark plugs per cylinder.
I guess Iridum conducts electricty better. According to sparkplugs.com it is also "6 times harder and 8 times stronger than platinum."

tommygun89.......yep if you have a Hemi it's 16 that's sixteen....................SIXTEEN plugs.

I haven't felt any performance improvement or mileage increase using the Irrid's raidermike67.
They do appear to have made my Hemi idle better. But that might be because my Champions really needed changing.[sm=confused06.gif]
The longevity is what I went for and the better quality of the plug.

One under the COP and another wire off of that.

how long do plug wires last?

What wires?

(06's don't have that octopus on the engine. Life is good!)

When I did have wires. (on an 95 Tahoe) I changed them every 24k. But that was a GM.
Also ended up replacing alternators about every 40k due to failure, and dist caps every 30-40k due to cracks...

Wonder what took me so long to go Mopar, eh?

many of manufacturers have moved to Iridium plugs for the OEM's from the factory. My wifes Intrigue had them in it, and like the "Good Weekend Mechanic" that I am, I decided to change them at 80k miles.
They are supposed to be good for 100k. When I pulled them, I noticed that the center electrode had transfered metal to the grounding tip, essentially maintaning a gap that the computer could adjust for. I did go ahead and change them, and didn't notice any change in performance, or mpg. This is a totally stock, maintaned vehicle with 110k miles on it now.

Plug change, 1hr. 40 min. engine off to engine on---piece of cake
My wife's 3800 is way harder than this---glad I put iridiums back in hers.

swivel head plug socket----PRICELESS!!!!

I did notice that the originals had opened the gap to .050" from the .045" of original gap
Guess that's why they recommend the 30k change out.

I imagine you could also do this with a Hemi, but at $10-$12 bucks a pop, that is a minor investment in one of these. I'm changing mine this weekend for the 5.7 with Champion platinums at 2.98 each.

I changed mine at 43K and they still had plenty of life left in them. I probably won't change them again unless I notice performance issues. There is nothing difficult about changeing them. It just takes a little longer because there are 16 of them.
