Default Question for ANYONE who works at a dealership/goes to a dealership for maintenance

So heres what I would like to know, What is your policy for parking a car on the lot after it has had any service work done on it? I always thought that it was kept in back where it was gated off and not out front in front of the building in the public parking lot where anyone could walk up to your vehicle.

The reason I ask is because I took my Ram down to my local dealership to have the 15,000 mile service done. I dropped it off they took the keys and about 2 hours later they gave me a call and said it was finished and to come pick it up before 4pm. I had a few other erands that had to be taken care of first so I told the service guy that I was gonna be there in a few hours (noon'ish) and went about doing what I had planned. I get dropped off at the dodge service area around 11:30 and see my truck sitting out front in the parking lot off to the side of the actual service/parts building with both windows rolled all the way down and the truck was un armed and unlocked!!! I asked the girl inside when my truck was brought around thinking they might have done it a little early since I said I would be there around noon but found out that they actually brought it up front and left it there as soon as I got through talking to the guy on the phone around 9:30 so basically it has been sitting out in a parkinglot that was open to the public with the windows rolled down and the doors unlocked and the alarm unarmed for roughly 2 hours out of the sight from all the workers. This seriously pissed me off and as I started to go through my truck to make sure everything was still there I noticed a number of cd's that I kept hidden in my visor were missing and a pocket knife that I always have in the center consul was missing. Now before you get on me about how your suppose to take out all valuables before dropping it off anywhere for work I did remove all visible items and everything that was left in the truck was not visible to the public and was in no place where anyone should have gone into (I know that is not the best way to do that and I do blame myself parcially for the thefts happening). I have never had this happen with this dealership before and the service rep even said the tech that was working on my truck was one of the best guys in the valley and has been working for dodge as a tech for at least 20yrs and wouldn't do anything to tarnish his reputation.

So now here I sit with this problem. I came home thinking maybe I brought them inside before I took it down with all the rest of the things I brought in but none of these items were there I searched everywhere for them but they are simply gone. I am filing a complaint with the Dealer ship. I do relize that while they may not have taken the items from my truck but they also left my truck completely open for anyone walking by it to grab anything they wanted out of it. Luckilly I still have the thousand dollars worth of speakers and amps still in it but still how stupid do you have to be to leave a vehicle unlocked with the windows down unattended in a public parking lot?!?!?!?!?!?!?! What would of happened if I were to have been late and came around 3 or 4? What would of happened of someone hopped inside and hot wired the thing and drove off with it????? To say the least I'm F*CKIN PISSED right now!!!!![:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@]

Well I don't really know what to say to that other than that sucks. When I take my truck to get work done at the dealer they don't leave it out like that. I wouldn't think thats policy what they did to you, I would hate to find out that it is.

The dealership is responsible for your vehicle while they have it--period!!!

You should try to talk to them and see if you can get it resolved there. Perhaps they could give you the next service for free or something like that. What happened truly sucks, hopefully they will come to some agreement with you. You did let them know about the the CD's and stuff BEFORE you left the lot---right.

Hope this works out for you.

normally a dealership will have something posted saying that they arent responsible for any theft on there lot and blah blah blah so dont be surprised if you dont get anything outta the deal...it sucks what had happened hope you DO get some kind of compensation though

I did let them know as soon as I found I saw the truck.....

Well truthfully I DIDNT park it on their lot THEY did. They parked it unlocked with the windows rolled down out of visible sight of any of the lot attendents who wouldn't even know who I was or why I was there. Now if i were to have left it there like that then I could see that their warning (which they dont have posted) would be in affect but the fact is that I DIDNT leave it there......

I work at a dealership, and if anything like that were to happen here and the customer complained, the customer would be reimbursed completely. (usually a free service or complete detail or something along those lines).

I own a Dodge Dealership in South Carolina, and we don't pull a car around for a customer until they are there to pick it up. Until then it is in a locked gate. If a customer pays and wants to come back later, we park the vehicle around front and lock the doors. As we lock the doors we place the key in a known place to the customer after we are sure they are bringing a spare. But to leave it out with the windows down is foolish. Luckily the entire truck wasn't stolen. Good luck next time.

i work at a dealership and service depts usually have a sign saying that they are not responsible for lost or stolen items THAT IS BS. That is there legal out and in most cases works, as in yours a couple of cds and knife, less than 100 dollars???? A dealership would generally give a free service, detail etc. to compensate for the bad experience. Maybe you shoud talk the service manger or the sales manager and see if there were any cameras that could see your truck. To answer youre question, we park them on the "public" lot but they are locked up and the keys are inside the dealership.

I had something similar happen to me,although nothing was stolen.

I went to buy my daughter a new Caliber, her 2004 Intrepid was destroyed when a man ran a red light.I had cleaned, washed, and waxed my truck that morning. As i sat talking to the salesman,I looked out the window and saw 2 people sitting in my truck and another standing beside it.I stood up and said what the hell are those people doing sitting in my truck? The salesman looked out and told me that the guy standing beside my truck was a salesman! These people were trying to sell my truck!
I got a kick out of this so I let it go on for a bit,the folks really looked over my truck, popping the hood and all!I let this go on untill the salesman came in looking for the keys to the "Blue truck with the HEMI in it"I got tickeled and told him they were in my pocket where they were going to stay! This guy turned three different shades of red in about 3 seconds!
The potential customers turned out to be a father and son looking for a car for the son. After seeing the stereo and mods done to the truck the poor kid was in love.I felt sorry for him.To their credit though they were full of complements on my truck even trying to buy it from me right there on the dealers lot! That sure had the salesmans hackels up!

from then on,I lock my doors!

Good luck on getting the dealer to compensate you for your loss,I hope they do right by you!

As an update I just got back from talking to the service manager and after discussing it with him he told me that he would look into why it was parked unlocked like that cause it is not thier policy to do so. Also they reimbersed me $55 for the stolen items. This realy pisses me off though that it happened but at least on the bright side they did take responsibility for it and paid for my losses and best of all my truck is still here and wasn't ripped off but still what a pain in the *** this has been.
