Default Have a few questions on the 02' RAM

I'm going to buy a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck 4x4 Quad Cab.
The truck comes loaded with:

-Has 86,000 miles on it..
-V8 5.9 Liter;
-Automatic;
-4WD;
-SLT;
-Towing Pkg;
-Ovrsize Off-Rd Tires;
-Oversize Wheels 20'

And I was just wandering how reliable these truck are?
Whats the gas mileage on these Specific 2002 5.9 models???
And are there any known problems that these 02' RAM have?

Thanks Guys

It all depends on what you are going to be using the truck for? I has the 5.9L engine in it, which is said to be very underpowered for the displacement. I have only heard that from people that use them for towing, and hauling heavy loads, etc. As for Mileage I would expect to see about 12mpg around town and appx. 17-19mpg on the highway. Someone correct me if I am wrong. Those bigger offroad tires will kill the mileage, so you might even expect lower numbers than those. All in all, it is a great truck. Will last forever, and look good doing it. The 1500 in 02' has the new exterior design, so you cant go wrong there. The only thing you might want to do is have a mechanic check it all out to make sure everything is as should be. Also, take the VIN # in to the parts dept. of your local Dodge dealership and have them check to make sure that all of the recalls have been completed. (If there are any for that particular model) Hope this helps a little! Good luck!

Yeah. Thanks a lot for the information. I already know what I'm getting into the Gas Mileage thing. But at least it's better then my sport car, RX7. 9 MPG, and 12 MPG freeway.[:@]

yes the 360s (5.9) are underpowered for the displacement. i heard they get around 9-12 mpg city and like 12-15 town but with those oversized tires depending on how big they are and how you drive i would expect 7-9 city and 10-12 hwy. if you could find a deal on an 03 you could get the 4.7 which has almost the same hp and gets way better gas mileage than the 5.9 or even the hemi which has way more hp and gets better gas mileage.

Oh really? Hmmm. Well I guess I don’t do a lot of heavy towing so I’m not concern about the power.
What would I get for gas mileage if I was to put the stock rims and tires back on? I don’t mind running on the stock rims and tires if it’s going to save me money... But the truck looks good, and I only travel 4-5 miles a day, so I shouldn't even worry about gas.

Thanks guys...

I have a 2002 2wd 5.9L Quad cab. (20in. factory rims/tires) I drive it very slow...and get 10mpg in the city and 14mpg on the highway.
It is very underpowered.....probably cuz' it weighs alot too.

It tows crappy....In fact I got passed by a V6 Ford Ranger doing 80mph pulling a Toyota Supra on a car trailer. And I was pulling 2 motorcycles in a enclosed trailer. (I was struggling just to go 65mph) (I even have 4.10 gears and my overdrive was off)

I wish I had a Hemi or the Cummins deisel

the factory 20s hurt towing a lot... anyway i have a 2002 4.7 qc 4x4 and can tow my 240z in an inlclosed car hauler and still have some passing power. but i have the factory 17's

So the only thing wrong with these specific 02' Ram is that the towing and gas mileage suck?
Well I also have a 98' Ford F150 at the moment. The F150 has a 4.6Liter, and I'm pretty confident this 02' Ram will be a good replacement for the Ford. Do you guys also agree???

My truck used to have the factory 17" wheels/tires and the factory 3.55 gears.....When I upgraded to the 20" factory wheel/tires I upgraded to 4.10 gears. It pulls great around town...but on the highway it still struggles....like I said, I got passed by a Ford RANGER[:@] pulling a car on a car hauler.
(My wifes 4.0L / 6cylinder Jeep Wrangler can out pull my Dodge Ram 5.9L [:@] )

fd3sxiong, I agree, (It is a good truck) I do like my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad cab - because it sure is prettyand has alot of room.
If it wasnt paid for, I probably would have traded it in for a Hemi or a Cummins powered Ram....or maybe even a Chevy truck.

it could depend on what kind of trailer you were pulling... aerodynamics can kill a truck at hwy speeds
