Megacab and commercial plates in NYS.
Hi all -
I am posting my question on every Dodge Ram forum I can find.
I got an 06 1500 Megacab. I live in NY state and when I bought it my NYS DMV assigned me commercial plates even thou I do not have any business, and I use my truck to drive to work, for home projects or to go somewhere with my wife and kids. In NY, NJ and CT you can not drive commercial vehicle on Parkways and this is where I am screwed sometimes. There is a rule in NYS that if a pickup truck weighs more than 5500 unladen it's got to have commercial plates. I did not know about that till I bought the truck and when the dealer was trying to get passenger plates for me, he could not. My mega weighs about 6400 empty. I would almost agree with the situation til the moment I saw couple of Megacabs, including 2500 with NY passenger plates. Then, when I went for oil change, I saw a 2500 quadcab with CTD on passenger plates, and those weigh more than 5500 empty.
My question is : is there anybody with megacab or QC 2500 in NY that has passenger plates ? How did you do it ?
PS: I know all QC 1500 may have passenger since they are light.
Thanks

Not true......I have an '06 QC 1500 and was also assigned commercial plates. I live in the Corning area upstate NY. I'm assuming it has to do with the weight of the vehicle because every large pickup I see it has commercial plates. Pickups like the Ford Ranger I've never noticed what plates they have but I'll look next time I see one. I've had my 1500 all up and down the Garden State Parkway whenever I'm in NJ to visit family. I've never thought about it, but when I lived in NJ I've seen tons and tons of commercial vans and pick up trucks on the GSP.
I had to change my vanity passenger plates over from a 2500 Suburban(weight of 5250) to the commercial vanity plates for the 2500 Mega Cab. It's all about the weight. My hubby's Dakota since it comes in under 5000lbs can be registered as a passanger vehicle. It doesn't make sense either. I pay a lot more to have this truck because of the commerical rating. Oh and your EZPASS-you have to register it also as business. It weighs too much to be considered for the passenger weight limits. So like me, you'll have to open two accounts(just praying they won't screw that up too).

Great looking MC. Love the flares.
What's upsetting me the most is that I saw couple of Megacabs, including 2500 Hemi with NY passenger plates - how?, can't figure it out. I wish they were parked somewhere so I could ask the owners. Also, I saw a diesel quad cab with pass plates.
Like I said above, do not go to the city, as you'll get a ticket for not having a business name posted on your door. 2 laws contradicting each other in same state, nice.

I am surprised to see your 1500 mega weighs in at 6400 as my 06, 2500, 4x4 QC SB with a CTD is listed at 6300 by the state of Iowa. I didn't think the Mega weighed more than a 2500 with a diesel. If I recall the Cummins weighs somewhere around 800 Lbs more then the hemi.
Sorry to hear your getting screwed by the State of NY.

what You may see in your registration is a curb weight for a 2500 QC short bed with hemi. Very often manufacturer will post just one weight with the lightest engine for the whole category. Probably you are closer to 7000 in reality.
Thanks

I think you are correct as the dodge web site shows the 1500 mega at 6544 lbs. For me it was nice of them to make mine have less weight (6300 lbs) as I have to licence it for for 8,000 lb rate and if it was listed heavier I would have to pay for 10,000 lb rate and it is more $$.
Sure hope you can get a cheaper fee on your plates.
