Oil Change Question

RE: Oil Change Question
Actually, whoever told you that was right. I have a 02 Ram QC 1500 4X4, and when changing my oil, I always poured new oil into the new oil filter. In addition, i would lightly oil the new oil filter gasket.
The reason for pouring new oil into the oil filter is simple. When you start up your vehicle, the oil first goes to the oil filter before circulating everywhere else. So once you start up your vehicle, the oil in the oil filter gets to your engine alot quicker.
I got this from a pamplet, i read at a local parts store, "Advance Auto".

RE: Oil Change Question
This is impossible on some vehicles, my Saturn has a cartridge oil filter that is the easiest oil change I ever did, it's right in the front of the vehicle, takes me longer to remove the drain plug then the filter. Speaking of drain plugs, I'm not sure who put it in but on my first oil change on my Saturn I had to use a breaker bar to get the damn plug loose and it took everything I had to get that thing turned, I ALMOST thought it wasn't going to budge.

RE: Oil Change Question
If its angled or you dont want to do it I wouldnt worry about it... your oil goes where you really need it when you pour it in.. and thats the crank case.... but I dont disagree...if you can do anything to help take care of a 30 to 40,000 dollar vehicle.... do it....

RE: Oil Change Question
I take mine to Shuck's auto parts. They take it for free. I can also set it curbside on trash pick-up days and the recycling pick-up will take it if it is in clear containers so they can make sure it is not contaminated with other liquids. I use the plastic gallon milk containers.

RE: Oil Change Question
Always a good idea to fill the filter with oil before installing if possible but not necessary. The 4.0 in my Jeep and the 2.0 in my Honda both have horizontal filters where you can not fill with oil before installing. Both of these engines are known for their "bulletproof-ness" and are easily capable of 200k to 300k miles. I say this to show even if you can't fill the filter it will not hurt the engine. There is always a thin coat of risidual oil in the engine and this protects the engine for a few seconds before the new oil gets to all the parts and the oil gauge/pressure light always registers/goes off within 1-3 seconds of start up. As long as you have a good pump, or even marginal pump, you will not have a problem. As far as synth oil goes, check out www.bobistheoilguy.com and see his tests.

RE: Oil Change Question
The Filter in my Cobra is horizontal. I fill it with oil enough to saturate the filter media and not spill out when I hold it sideways...
The Ram's filter gets filled to the top before install.
The only thing dumber than not filling a new filter with oil, is also waiting 'till the engine is cold (like the next day) to start it up after the oil change. [sm=badidea.gif]
