This may be a stupid question but what does it mean when these motors I found on EBAY say that a motor is a "N" vin number? Do certain motors only bolt into compatible vehicles? How do I tell what my truck is according to it's vin? Also, would a HEMI bolt up in my truck?
"N" is the standard 4.7L engine and "J" is an H/O engine which comes with a forged crank & higher compresion pistons, H/O cams/heads (which are not much different than the standard 4.7L heads) ... You can NOT mix the J block internals with the N block meaning you can NOT take a forged 4.7L crank and stick it into your N block... the reason is because the crank position sensors are mechined in different locations... so if you did put a forged crank in a N block... in may not even start and if it did start it would not run right at all...
The "J" block is what you want... but they are hard to find. The grand cherokee is the largest donor of the "J" block... actually I think its the only donor.

Not a problem... If you find a "J" block grab it! I always have my eyes peeled for one to build up.
