for future referance, instead of disconnecting the negative, pull the PCM fuse and then try that. It works 95% of the time.

Thats what happens when you let your wife drive your truck. Or at least thats what happens to me she never gets the gas cap on correctly.

You have to turn the key on and off 3 times without starting the engine. The third time leave it on and it should post a code on you odometer.
Exactly what HuskyJazz stated. Your lights will flash and your gauges will sweep and it should pop up any codes where the digital odometer is.
will it do this on a 3rd gen dakota as well?

I think there is some type of presure sensor in the fuel tank or the vacume is needed to pull the fuel back to the tank from the regulator. But thats just a guestimation.
