Default Cam question....

I would like to get more acceleration from my truck. 1/8 mi and 1/4 mi especially. I use it to pull a 7000 pound camper quite a bit tho. I've steered away from headers because I heard they will hurt my torque some, and I need all the torque I can get for towing. Would a cam upgrade be a good choice for me? Will I lose or gain torque? I see people saying a cam can gain 35 or 40 hp, but nobody talks about torque. Isn't an addon that increases torque better for a truck's acceleration and towing than an addon that increases hp? I have a flashpaq and love it, but I am skeptical of spending money any other small mods like cai's and pulleys. I have about $1000 to work with right now. If a cam isn't for me because of the towing, then it seems nitrous is the only way to gain much acceleration and not hurt my towing capabilities. Please give me your thoughts. Any help would be appreciated.

I dont know much about cames but if u want more Torque without spending money out ur **** then go with a lower gear ratio i dont know what u have 3.92s 3.55s but if u want more torque+accelleration then put between 4.11s to 4.60s if u have 4X4 then ull have to do both front and back with the same ratio if u plan on using it. if u have 2wheel drive just the rear or if u dont use ur 4x4 option period but if theres anychance at all u might...get it front and back thats the easy way but ive only heard of this improving gas mileage on 4.7engines like i have if u have a Hemi or a 5.9 or a 5.2 whatever the 316 is i dont know if this works the same but if you have the 4.7 5 Sp Manual or Auto ive heard of between 2-5MPG better mileage between 65-80 by raising the RPMs a certain amount making the engine not work as hard although if u like to speed this will cut down on how fast your truck can go

But if ur looking for the most torque and most accel in 1/8Mi and 1/4Mi go with 4.60s although if u have the larger engines i think your gona loose MPG not by much maybe 1-2 but ur truck will be alot faster on takeoff and accellerating

The H/O cams offer a decent amount of torque. I know they made 15RWHP & 25lbs more on my 2002 4.7L... at 300.00 a set they are a very affordable mod that you can complete in your driveway.

If you wanted more HP & torque you could step up to the 206 cams which are H/O cams that have been reground to the 206 profile... but the cost jumps from the 300.00 H/O cams to over 700.00 for the 206 cams. The 206 cams will give you approximately 36hp/66ft/lb..

Im a firm beleiver in 4.56 gears! I have them installed on my 2002 4.7l and it has made a night and day difference in ALL round performance. Fuel economey has gone UP +3-4MPG from 0-65MPH.... 60MPH seems to get the best fuel economey which is avarage 20MPG. Now mind you have have done allot of mods to my 4.7L so my fuel economey is a combined effect of all mods working together.

An electric fan will give you a SOLID 10RWHP... thats will make a noticable gain.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

well, if you have a hemi, Comp Cams have a couple different cams for the hemi. Last time i looked at it, i think i remember them being in different ranges. The one cam i could find is 210/214-523/526-112, that is made by comp cams. this cam is suppose to give you 35HP and 25ft/lbs torque. so i'd try lookin at comp cams and see if you can find somethin through them. good luck man

I'm guessing it is the Hemi you're asking about since you have the 2500. There isn't much that you can do to add a lot of torque for cheap. Gears have been suggested, but you already probably have a decent ratio in there (at least not the 3.55[:'(]). You'd also have to swap the front and back gears if you decided to change them out...not cheap.

I suggest you either leave the truck as is or get a Cummins as I don't think that you'll be satisfied until you dump a ton of money in.

I do have the hemi, and I have 4.10 gears. I am pretty happy with it the way it is, would just like some more. A cummins is WAY too expensive for me, and when you chip them it is an affordable mod but I don't want all the black smoke. Not knocking the cummins tho, it is an awesome powerplant. Sounds like a 6.1 cam or something just a little more than that will be the way to go for me. I don't want to go any lower with the gears because I do alot of 70 mph highway driving. The electric fan would be a great idea, but when camping I run a 3000W power inverter off my battery and my truck idling, so I think that an electric fan would overdraw my alternator. Air Ram, how much would a power wire help me for RWHP and for Torque? I already have a flashpaq, and I run high octane. I have considered headers and exhaust, but have been told there is little to gain there, and I don't want a loud truck when towing a camper from Pennsylvania to Florida and back. I was thinking of nitrous, but the cam will give me more power all the time instead of just when I decide to burn some laughing gas. Maybe in time I can do both!

Whoever told you that you lose torque with headers is smoking crack. Go get yourself a set of Pacesetter longtube ceramic coated headers for $400, get the cam for another $300 and then go have some FUN!!!

I think u should go get a cummins. I know u say it is expensive. By the time u spend the money on headers and cam, you could by a cummin and not worry about engine failure down the road. You can get a TST Power Max CR and it will black smoke for about 3 days then will clear up after the 2 computers work together. You want torque, you can a hell of a lot from the cummins for very cheap

helopilot, that's one bad truck you got there. Sounds like nitrous added to your list and there will be little on the road that will be able to even see your taillights. I see you have a 180 thermostat. I have the superchips, but when I asked them about it, they didn't suggest it. Do you think I should go to a 180 stat? Does it help hp/torque? What is the reason for it?
