Default rear wheel speed sensor, hard to replace?

WHile stopped at a light today, my 03 1500 gave me a chime and the ABS and emergency lights came on. I did some digging on the internet and found that the problem is from the rear wheel speed sensor. THe speedo has always "ticked" a little while sitting still, but today it was alot worse, like bouncing up to 5-10mph while at a dead stop.

Anyway, I called two dealers and they both said this part is NOT covered under my powertrain warranty, even though other posts had led me to believe it is. I guess those folks just ran into better dealers than the one I am dealing with. After the quote of $36 in parts and $61 in labor, I wanted to know if anyone had changed one of these, and if so how hard of a job was it?

I think it is a pretty easy job. Check here for the Dodge Maintenance manual covering your year and look it up.

Couldn't get that link to work, but this one does. Helped me out alot with this problem, still wish I could find one with info on the 4.7 though.

Oh yeah, to download this just open it and file-save as.

Those manuals should cover all of the engines. The 4.7, 5.7 and Cummins.

OK, I understand that this is technically an electical component of the truck, and not really part of the drive train. Therefore not under the 7/70k warranty. My major problem is that a quick search of the symptoms turned up alot of people with the same problem, and that this problem is putting miles on my truck when it's not moving. Stopped at a long light today, the ABS and Emergency brake lights came on again, and the speedo began to "bounce" as usual when this happens. At the next light, I noticed that my trip odometer was going up, 2/10 of a mile while sitting at that one light.

I know that's not alot of miles and as long as the problem is fixed soon it won't matter in the slightest, but it sounds to me like Dodge would offer me a little satisfaction here, I don't see that happening though. Looks like I'm out $100 if I want them to fix it and $40 and my labor if I want to do it myself.

Default Broke wheel speed sensor

Hello,

2008 ram that started giving ESP and ABS light at highway speed when using cruise control a couple weeks ago. In doing other research most issue came up with the wheel speed sensor. Last fall ended up with a leak on passenger side rear that threw a bunch of transfer case fluid all over the inside of the tire. I think this may have caused the sensor to deteriorate and when trying to remove it yesterday broke into two pieces. Where the bolt holds the sensor was still in place and in using a plyers to try to wiggle loose that came off leaving the rest of the sensor.

Has anyone else had this same problem and if so and advise on how to get the rest out?

Thank You,

Wade

Grab it with some needle-nose vice grips, and kinda twist it out. Either that, or pull the axle, and drive it out from inside the brakes there. (may not need to pull the axle...... wouldn't hurt to look.)
