Default RE: Spark Plugs : FYI Hemi owners

platinum plugs dont have a "hotter" spark than a copper plug. copper plugs foul sooner than platinums because they tranfer more energy to the combustion chamber (were you need it). platinum plugs retain a lot of heat (energy) in the plug itself to keep the electrode clean (and in return, making it last longer). the problem with alot of the newer heads is the spark plug being recessed into the head itself and to much heat is retained in the plug, then you start getting misfires. alot of people think a hotter plug throws more spark. a hotter plug retains more heat in itself and fouls less. copper performs much better but doesnt last as long. ive built quite a few high performance piston and rotory engines and have found this to be the case on several engines. hope this helps.

Looking at the 5.7 in the Ram, I know I can change the plugs, but the the last two on booth the left and right look tricky due to the lack of room, But with the right set of extensions, I don't see it as impossiable, question, What size are the spark plugs? ( socket )
Local stealership quoted me $400 to do ONLY the plugs. They claimed the plug cost $7.89 each. So I tackled it myself. It takes around 2 hours and minimal swearing to change all of them by yourself. Get a buddy and some beer and then it will go faster. Passenger side is easy, driver side the back two cylinders are tricky. Get a good swivel adapterand a couple short extentions and its doable. Also don't forget the anti-sieze.
I've read in many places NOT to use anti-seize. It adversely affects the torque needed to put them in. It's only 14 ft/lbs, and apparently the anti-seize provides enough lubrication to accidentally torque 'em too much. I paid $1.80 ea for my NGK 5306s and the folks I bought the truck from charged me $177 to change 'em. I may try the next set (in four years or so) myself. Apparently not hard, just aggravating. I think the socket size is 5/8"
OK well as for the anti-seize.... i work on aircraft engines and we use anti-seize on all bolts and screws in hot areas because all it does is keep the two metals from welding together at hot temps. not using the anti-seize will only cause more problems for you when you do your next maintenance. it will NOT EFFECT THE TORQUE VALUE!!!

agreed, they make that stuff for a reason, and it works. The only thing with these plugs is the threads do stick in the head about 1/4 inch, so don't put your compound on within that first 1/4 inch.

I just put NKGs in mine, the laser platinums, got them for 50% off so why not...I don't seem to have any problem with them, i think it was mentioned here that how can the motor detect if you have a copper or a platinum tipped plug? the only difference is one lasts a little longer than the other. The spark is going to be the same no matter what, the only thing thats going to change that is the gap. Your coil still only puts out so much to that plug, its not the spark plug that determines the hotness. Thats your coil, the plug just delivers the spark and the gap corrects the heat and legth.

What could be happening to some of you is that the compound is put on the whole thread, some compounds under certain heats and compression will actually start to turn into a watery substance, and either A) ground out your plug causing a missfire, or B) fouling.

May be an old thread but it stops someone from starting a new one and asking the same question all over again.

Well I had thought to do a search to see how many other users did replace their plugs, what they replaced them with, how it went.

Just cause I did mine....
