Just did an oil change....
so its been a rainy 3day wknd here in CT and i decided to do the oil in my beast.
I went with Royal purple 5w30 6qts and a K&N filter; instant power gains, less "tick"
My experiences with RP have superceeded other oil mfr's....curious to see what the rest of you think...

Your Hemi takes seven quarts and it does not like being low. Shorting the oil has been a chepp performance tip since I raced in the 60's, but you have to check to oi; frequently since you have no margin for any loss. I went to 5W20 and reduced the ticking even more, but I only use it during the cooler 6 months. I personally an using Amsoil, but get 10 Ram owners together and you get 4 primary opinions, 3 will say dino and the remainder will be split between Mobil1, Amsoil and Royal Purple. If you keep to a regular schedule and your happy, why even ask.
Wanderer.....I didn't know that AMSOIL had brought out their 5-20 viscosity synthetic yet. I thought the closest they had (important to me since the MDS system requires 5-20) was 5-30 weight. When did they come out with their 5-20, which I understood was under development.....and from where did you purchase it?
DelwareDon,
I have a great local Exxon station that I have trusted for long time. He stocks multiple brands of oil including Exxon, Mobil 1 and Amsoil. After you're question though, I questioned myself on what I have received. I checked the Amsoil website and found a listing for 5w20 in their XL line. Checked my receipt and that is what I got, not the SAE line. It's fine for me, fairly easy on the petal and change it at the 5000 miles. He convinced me to change from Mobil 1 at no additional charge and the cost is only pennies more than if I did it myself. They check all the fuild levels and even the tires. He has never chased me away when I amunder the lift doing my own inspection.

Wanderer...You are absolutely correct. I do remember that Amsoil presently has the 5-20 weight in their XL synthetic, which is rated for 7500 mile changes. I believe the5-20that they have under development is for their oils that are rated for much longer oil change intervals. Since you change at 5000 miles, theXL will work just fine for you.
i run RP in the truck, the civic and even my Camaro. the honda get the 5w20. heck i will give it a shot when i change the oil the next time in the truck, i have 10w30 in it right now.

I've used RP 5W20 in my 1500 Hemi with mixed results. I did 2 changes of 3k mi each. While the "tick" was somewhat less than that of M1, it was only a little better. I saw no long-term sustainable MPG improvements. My problem was that my UOAs showed significant copper wear almost 4x greater than with M1. With 2 OCIs showing the same pattern, I dumped the RP and went back to M1. Copper wear instantly reduced to the normal range. So my Hemi doesn't do RP any more. Using RP 5W30 in my Toyota 1MZ v6 and Caravan 3.8L v6 has had good UOAs, noise is the same, but consumption is substantially reduced. Overall, I consider RP a good oil, pricey, not widely available, with competitors that are cheaper, more available, that do as good or better service. YMWV...
what are you guys anyhow, a bunch of candy a** whimps? real men use real oil...Rotella 15w-40 diesel rated stuff, by the drum, I got 217k miles out of my last truck on it and it wasn't using any oil when it went bye-bye due to soft transmission gears.
Where do you buy this fancy pants oil anyhow, at the fern bar? or does your wife pick it up for you at the mall when she gets her nails done?
looks like I sank to a new low by logging in here:-)
(ok, all in jest, Rotella is a great oil for heavy trucks, tractors and winter motorcycle oil, I am using Mobil 1 5w-30 myself in the new truck, but still have it in the 62 Town Wagona and 68 Stepside)
