i just bought a 2002 ram, and i dont really want to do any mods. but i gotta do somethin to help out the fuel economy. anyone use a jet chip? im thinking about a stage 1 just for a little power boost and better mpg. does it really do anything? thanks
I have used a Stage 1 in an 00 ranger and a stange 2 in an 03 dakota... never had any problems with them. Just make sure you disconnect the negative teminal to reset the pcm. I don't think that you will notice too much of a change, if you have an automatic, probably shift points. The stage 2 required a CAI, aftermarket exhaust and thermostat change. It was a decent upgrade for the Dakota. But the best way to go is Superchips Flashpaq. I love mine, internet upgradable when I instal some new toy in my truck, actually can change some things around. Other than that, dude, you bought a truck... gas mileage is going to suck.
Negative... in actuallity, you can go to a lower octane. According to the owners manual, the 5.7 L requires the use of 89 octane fuel. With the superchips flashpaq, it has an option called flex fuel, where you can switch from 87 to 91 (with obvious changes in performance). So, if you are following the owners manual, you should at least save a few bucks a fill up.
I dunno about superchips, but i have a hypertech programmer, and FFMedic1479 is right, you can select what octane you want to run, anywhere from 87, to 93 i beleive
