4.7L Rumor is this true
Ok guys i was at work tonight and was talkin to a guy who drives a dodge 1500 2nd gen. I told him aobut my Dad purchasing a 06 4.7L six speed. (perfect truck for him he loves it). When i said 4.7 he gave me this look and shook his head and told me that the 4.7L is junk. Not because of power reasons ( which is what i get alot but hey the truck is a rcsb and the 4.7 has plenty for this application). but because he says that the top ends on the 4.7L tend to fail around 50k miles and the top end needs rebuilt. He specifically mentioned the the oil pickup is too small thus causing the rockers aand such to fail at early life. I have been on this forum for some time and have yet to see a post about it. Kinda thinkin this guy is full of it. He also said that his buddy has a stock 2500 hemi that can go from 40 mph to 80 mph with a fifth wheel trailer in approx 45 feet. Also told me the cummins diesels are junk and that if you don't change oil at 3k miles it turns to the consistency of water. So i'm thinkin he's just not too educated.
Well the fact you haven't seen posts confirming this guys "expertise" should be reassuring. Not saying it has never happened before, but this is just "his" opinion. Your Dad loves his truck and that is all that should matter, and provided pm is done on the truck at the recommended intervals and he doesn't beat it into the ground, he should be able to enjoy it for many years (hopefully no top-end problems!)
As far as his buddy's claim, well good for him. I only wish people merging onto the highway had this capability!

I don't know about that one....My 4.7 is just over 50,000 and I have had no probs with it. It still runs just like when I first bought it. I have not heard about the top end's going out, but I hope mine doesn't!
I asked a similar question on this forum a few months ago. A friend of mine's top end failed. Both heads at 68,000 miles. He was told by his mechanic that there is a problem with theseon the 4.7's. No one on here including myself has heard of or had such a problem though. I believe his situation was an isolated incident. He also purchased his Ram with 65,000 miles on it so who knows how the last owner took care of it.
See i was pretty sure that the guy was full of it. Seeing as I see so many posts about people who love the 4.7L and swear by it. Trust me this truck is going to be taken care of. My dad's already talking about this being his last truck. Keep it take care of it. He wants to get at least 10-15 years out of the truck. Gotta say i'm impressed with Dodge. We owned a GMC before this and it was p.o.s. This dodge just blows my mind with the attention to detail on the interior and just the little things that make it special. If someone could give me a rundown on how to post pics I got a few on my cellphone (don't have digital cam) that I could post up. It's a black RCSB TRX4.

40 to 80 in 45 feet is a feat in itself not mention with a fifth wheel behind it, yes he is full of **it. Tell your dad to enjoy it and most fathers dont beat there vehicles. By the way, what are the reasons the cummins sucks? What a pig nut.
Well my 4.7L just turned over 70k miles, and has never given me one problem. It has been a great truck and I plan on keeping it for many years. The Cummins Diesel is also just about the most powerful, and most reliable diesel out there... He knows his stuff!
I know I'm a Dakota owner, but I'm gonna put in my 2 cents worth. I've known some people with the Cummins and 4.7l in their Rams, and they never had any problem. Friend's dad had a ram with the 4.7l in it for many years, and from what I last saw he still had it.
