Default 5.7 to 6.1 Coil Swap... Done!

I've been researching this for a while now, and a few weeks ago I finally decided to buy that kit from ebay. You know the one... it comes with the valve covers, coils, and wiring connectors. It wasn't too bad of a job either. I pulled the truck in the garage at about 1pm, and finished around 6pm. The hardest part was removing the tape from the stock wiring and getting the wiring tray (around the back of the passenger side valve cover) to disengage the studs that hold it in place. Hopefully this will simplify future tune ups, and any ignition issues that might come up. You know how they say "the camera adds a few pounds"? Well, the flash seems to make the engine look a lot dirtier than it is. Here's a few pics I snapped while I was working...

Before:

After:

I also installed my EGR block off kit. I'm still working on the CMR tune to get the engine light to turn off, but that's only a small problem. It might be just me, but I think it starts easier and runs just as smooth, if not a little smoother. My wires were MSD's with only 45k on them. I'm sure they would have lasted another 20k to get me to 100k but I wanted to get this done before winter. I need to clean the intake manifold up, I just didn't have time Sunday night to detail under the hood.

Nice, I've been looking at that kit for awhile, wanting to do it. Unfortunately, as long as I've been looking at that kit I've watched the price go up with it. It's not way up high on my lst of stuff to get since I installed the shorties. Maybe someday....good job though!

I just ordered a kit like this also but what was the process in the wiring? Also how much did you pay for your kit and do you have a link.

Other than cleaning up all those wires under the hood, what are the benefits of this swap?

I think the cost was in the neighborhood of $450. I priced it out online through moparpartsamerica and the parts separtely were really close to being the same. I was a little confused at first, because the coils have a 3 wire connector vs. our 2 wire coils. I went to the dealer and got a wiring diagram for a newer charger SRT8, and it showed that the 3rd wire terminal was emtpy. Since the kit comes with two different wire sizes, and the Ram (at least the 2005) also has 2 different wire sizes on the coils... I just soldered the same size wires into the circuit. I used the shrink tube/solder connectors (as shown in the pic) and it made things super easy.

I wouldn't say that there is anything directly related to performance with this swap. I'll know more after I get my CEL off, and compare some spark data from the DSP. I haven't logged anything yet, since the CEL is on with the EGR removed. That should be fixed soon though.

Eventually I hope to change the intake, heads and front cover to a 6.1 version, which having these coils will help, since you can't run the MSD wires over the 6.1 intake... that and it would look stupid if you did, LOL.

Yeah, Ive been looking at this for some time now and like you said, it isnt performance, its more visual and to make room for the 6.1 intake. Ive been looknig for one but you know you need the 5.7 to 6.1 intake adapters, the intake itself with fuel rails, injectors and have to modify the front timing plate right?

ive heard the 5.7tb will fit the 6.1 intake but there is something you have to do to the harness or something. Other say it wont fit so Im not clear on that part yet. Ive been watching the Charger/Challenger/LX boards for intakes and setups but i see now I need to hit the lotto first.

If I'm going to the trouble of putting a 6.1 intake on the truck, my plan would be to change everything I could without disturbing the block. So yeah, intake & TB, heads and front cover.

Looking good, that really cleaned things up.

A few things about the 6.1 intake that I have heard that you will want to look into is that A.) it does not line up with the intake ports on the 5.7 so you need to find a way around that and B.) I believe it moves the power band to the upper rpm range, which for the cars is great but with our trucks it can actually end up hurting performance more than helping it so it be worth reading up quite a bit on it before dropping that kind of money into one. Also the TB is going to be moved from the back of the engine where it is now to the front of the engine with the 6.1 intake on, so you're going to be looking at re-fabbing a CAI or new piping to the stock box as well as relocating the TB so cutting and splicing the wire connection now and extending it about a foot or so. Good luck with it though, I would love to see how the conversion settup really works. Its just a bit to $$$ when all is said and done for me.

squat. but man it sure looks clean. that's why I switched to the T volts. With my MIT the rats nest of wires under it looked like crap.
