Default Purchase Advice

I'm considering an upgrade from my '05 Laramie QC 4x4 to a new loaded QC Sport/SLT. I recently visited a dealer regarding a truck the GM at the dealership has been using as his demo vehicle (4200 miles on the odo). The truck is loaded with all the features I want.

The deal that was offered is this:

MSRP: $42,245
Dealer Discount: $ 2000
Factory Cash: $ 1250
Price to me: $38,995

Financing was 0% for 60 mos. There was also $6300 worth of trade-in factored into the deal, netting a total payment of around $580 per month.

I've bought a few cars in my day, including demo Rams, and this seemed like a pretty crappy deal to me. There's a lot of reports on this forum that people are getting $10,000 below invoice, but here in central Ohio the dealers seem to think MSRP is a fair asking price. They also seem to think that no discount should be offered for the 4200 miles on the odometer. The dealer wasn't willing to budge at all, so I walked.

Where the heck are you guys going to get your trucks for $10,000 below MSRP?

My 10K under invoice was when the rebates were a lot bigger and they were having a hard time selling trucks. No discount for 4200 miles on the truck should be a deal breaker. I'd expect at least 2K off for that kind of miles.

42K sticker on a quad cab? Seems really high to begin with.

It's a loaded SLT. I'd post a link for you, but would rather not advertise the truck on this dealer's behalf.

I agree, 4200 miles should equal a significant discount. I had $2000 in mind as well. Otherwise, if I pay full price I'm would be paying for the miles that the manager put on the truck, and that doesn't seem right to me at all. They seem to think that this is a gem of a truck and that someone will be willing to pay that price for it.

That deal is a joke... they should be knocking another 5k off that price. I wouldnt even consider that truck being as its pretty much used w/ 4200 miles on it...

Not sure where your located but got 12K off mine with only 18 miles on it. For the most part you should beable to get 24% off sticker right away. If they wont do it than someone else will. I have three friends who have done this within the last couple months Just tell them thats what your willing to spend and stick to you guns. Plan on spending like 3 hours of them beating you done but stay strong and even use catch phrases like " I think I should just go home and think about it then" they DO NOT want you to leave and this will kick them in the a@@. Also go the last day of the month this helps a little sometimes just depends on that dealerships month of sales. Oklahoma City.
They also ahve a thing called preferred price for those companies that deal with this program. Most the time this price is below invoice and you also get the additional rebates ontop of that so getting 7K plus is really easy. But this just proves that they can still do these types of deals. You probably wont get the 0% interest but right now car loan rates are really low around 3.16% here though can be a difference of about 15-35 a month difference.

Thanks for the feedback. Not sure why this dealer isn't willing to deal. Not only does this truck have 4200 miles on it, but they've had it on their lot for 3 months. I'm beginning to wonder if the GM was planning on putting some miles on the truck before he buys it himself.

I'd agree that this doesn't sound like a deal at all. Hold out until the end of the month when they need a quick sale to meet their numbers. You should get at least 10k off on a brand new truck to get a decent deal. With miles, I'd expect more than 10k.

With 4300 miles I'd shoot for at least 13k off. I'd skip this deal and get a better one on a brand spanking new one. Also if you do go at the end of the month don’t go in until like 630pm or 7pm.

And don’t fall for ANY charges i.e. like they tried to do to me with a $299.99 charge for nitrogen in the tires. Yes it better than regular air for tire pressure monitoring but not a must. Yeah they took that charge and a few others off. Just said I’m not paying for that.

Remember to joke and try not to be confrontational even though you really want to on some lies. Even a salesman will get defensive and aggressive. So just joke and laugh about everything you'll get more out of them.
Then at the end of the signing you can call them whatever you want lol.

Got $9,600 off msrp two months ago in central calif. Big dealership and I was the only one on the lot or in their showroom both times I went there, once on a Sat afternoon. They weren't moving too many vehicles then, think that had a lot to do with the discount. I'm happy, love the truck.
