oil changes every few thousand miles???!!??

I start getting ready for change at every 5k interval since it is easy to remember and owners manual says 6k for my driving. The reminder comes on at 2500 miles regardless of driving, been doing it since new so I just reset it and ignore. Use M1 and a Mopar filter from Walmart, best price around, then give em the used oil back next 5-6 k interval.

Thanks for the replies.I will probably have to drill it into my head that 5,000 mile oil changes are ok.,my manual states 6,000 OCI,or 6 months. That will help offset the high cost for synthetic oil.May even use conventional for 5,000 miles and send in an oil sample to be tested, like Hammer said, thats the only way to test the oil proprties after being used.I'm just old school!By the way, which conventional oil has the highest vicosity at 100 degrees.

I haven't been paying attention to the light in mine. It usually goes off after I change though, which is about every 4k miles or every 2 months. I've done that interval with all my vehicles though. I usually get away with oil, filter and change (done myself either in the driveway or at the base auto hobby shop) for right around 20-25 (add 3$ if I do it on base.) I'm not worried about the records either. I keep a spiral notepad for records. I write down the date, mileage, engine hours and miles since last change. Then, I tape the reciepts to the page. There is also a website called Fuelly that you can upload vehicle info to and a program called garage life for my phone that I can mobile update with. I upload my vehicle maintenance to that site as well as the notebook I keep.
I don't feel comfortable waiting much past 4k to do an oil change, no matter how long is said that it can last.
