Default for everyone with exhaust, and looking for more power

the other day I was under my truck just looking at all the exhaust components, and noticed that each header comes down sweeps under the truck, HOWEVER, where the 2 pipes connect to become 1, dodge has crunched them down to merge them, which is an obviously the most restrictive thing you can ever do. did anyone do something about that when swapping out exhaust? I havent changed exhaust and am a little nervous to do so, but fixing that right there would have the exhaust flowing exponentially easier. I honestly couldnt even believe it when I saw it. its crunched down to about a half circle each and then they are welded into pipe feeding into the muffler.

Sounds like your talking about the "Y-Pipe" a lot of guys replace it out w/ the magnaflow Y-pipe...I am swapping mine out once I get some free time off from work. It's a $27 pipe off the internet bring it to the shop n have them weld it in...

yea, thats the name for it. I cant believe they smash it down to about half diameter. I will definitely be replacing that. anyone know the size? 2.5 into 3, 3 into 3?

Yah it's horrendous when you look at that and see how bad it looks, very very restrictive. Here's a pic of one I found on another forum

Original...YUCK...Makes you wonder why...

KEEP IN mind, that backpressure is a good thing when it comes to cylinder scavenging....... I'm sure the engineers took that into account.

ive also heard form some 1/4 fanatics that NO back preasure burns valaves.
i believe that a quality exhaust muffler would take this into effect and design accordingly...
also back preasure helps torque numbers, but that OEM Y pipe is BS ..!

Been that way for a long time. My 08 is like that too. It is 2.5" to 3" on the Maganflow Y.

It gives the venturi effect to speed up the gasses, but can be restrictive at the same time. Replacing it with as bigger Y will move the powerband up in the rpm band a bit be reducing some backpressure.

It'll reduce some back pressure but not enough for any serious effects, right? I don't seeing it causing that many issues...

back when i was a total gearhead I read countless performance and engine books, the majority of people said that back pressure is irrelevant, however there are a few that swear you need some, and cylinder scavengine I understand slightly, but from a performance stand point, an exhaust that breathes easier, puts out better numbers and has to work less under normal circumstances. however I dont know if its worth the risk?
