As far as I know the only real issues are with the rear end, which in consideration is pretty small compared to others. Take a look at Ford and all their issues with turbos and trannys, there is not 12 reported cases like in the ram. But rather 100s, possible even thousands. The issue with the rear end (someone correct me if I am wrong) is there is a pinion nut that comes loose causing the driveshaft to drop. A recall had been done too on most vehicles if I am not mistaken. I think the problem now is that the 10 and 11 models are starting to see a few. In all reality if thats the only thing that most people can point out as a problem in the ram. Thats pretty good.

As far as getting into the 13, its not so much new technology as it is just new in the ram. The 8 speed tranny is new technology, but this could be a very good idea. No shift linkages, or any other mechanical part for that matter. Something new too is the central tailgate and rambox lock. This alone is a big plus.
As far as some other things, the new optional air ride suspension and the Pentastar V-6 for example. This technology has been around for a little while, although it is new in the RAM, they still have been around for a few years so its not brand new technology.

I was considering the 13 myself this fall as my 2 year upgrade, everything is still covered under warranty. It does make a difference for me that I won't have it more then 3 years, but still if something new like that is gonna fail, its gonna be in the 3 years. Its the reliability after that I guess you could be concerned about...

All in all tho this is an incredible truck, if your already a ram guy then honestly the 4th gens should be a no brainer. The interior is the best I have ever seen it (everythings actually built with quality and in the right places) The powertrain, well come on, its the HEMI! Reliability I think is awesome too compared to some others.

IF I can make any "must haves" judging by what your going to use it for. Get the 3.92 gears, and make sure you get the limited slip diff. You will thank me for that later. IF you do plan on going 2013, I would still stay away from the 3.9. If your going to tow as much as I think you will, the HEMI is still a better fit. Of course we can't compare mileages yet, but it should be comparable to that of the ecoboost. Ill tell you right now, the HEMI will out pull the ecoboost, and get WAY better MPG in doing so. The other thing that you will have to conciser is a set of helper air bags for the back. You might know this already, but the 1500s are no longer equipped with leaf springs. They are now a coil, it makes for EXCELLENT everyday driving. (seriously drives like a car) But when having any weight on the back, I will tell you its going to sag. That is one plus about the 13, is your never going to have to worry about it. Also it raises the current payload of about 1800lbs, to around 3200.

That is my understanding it is the pinion nut.

I tow a 27' camper that is about 6500 lbs and I have no issues at all. I have towed a lot with this truck and I keep up on te maintenance better than I have on my previous trucks. I probably go overboard but fresh oil is always better than old oil! Anyway I bought mine with the 3.92 and the hemi because I wanted to tow and knew I would be towing a lot. I have yet to be dis appointed with the performance of the truck. I have also use it to pull logs out of the woods and it has performed flawlessly. Get the crew cab 4wd, hemi, 3.92 gears and you will get everything you want. Heck mine even has the. Odds in the rear floor boards and hey are great when working away from the house all day. I also had mine under coated before I ever drove it and after two New Hampshire winters the under carriage looks great. Well off to church. Hope all of this helps!
