UPDATE:

The 2012 1500 4x4 w/5.7 is at 40k in the past 25 months we've had it. Aside from a shock going out under warranty no issues. The 3.92s give good towing power and it will pass everything but a gas station. Empty the MPG is 14-17 on the highway. Not horrible, but not great by today's standards either.

The 2014 1500 4x4 w/3.6 which I've been running since April is over 52k. No real issues. If I keep it under 70 mph the mpg is 20-25 on the road. Between 70-80 mph we are looking at 16-20 mpg. Wind and hills are the 3.6/8 speed combos Achilles heel. Use of tow/haul mode in these scenarios is required to keep a constant speed. It feels like the pickup isn't holding together as tightly as I'd like. Nothing major, but things like it rocking forward while starting the engine in the morning, etc. I was planning on keeping it for my wife after I'm done with it as a company car, but my instincts are saying this one might be expensive after 100k. We will see. It does seem to drive nicer than the 2012 did or the 2013 I replaced with the 2014.

Default 2014 Mileage

Just turned 14,000 miles. Until the cold weather set in here in Western New York State and Christmas shopping, I was averaging between 18-20 MPG for local travel. Last three tanks were just braking 17 MPG. Year-to-date average (life time) is standing at 19.43 MPG. No serious problems, but have some dash trim that doesn't fit very good and some creaking from the instrument cluster and center stack when heating up the inside of the cabin.

Regards,
Dusty

I think that happens with most newer rigs in the cold areas.

So much plastic inside these days. Was -10F here yesterday, and I noticed my '09 (new to me) was creaking some as the cab warmed up.

The strip of dash over the defroster on my '00 TJ will actually buckle and try and pop out of the clips when it gets warm!

Well since i created this post , i put on like 10k so now i am at 41k , i read all of your posts and how do you get another newer truck? Do you guys pay these off and go get another one? I am thinking of going to Ford they have a great gas mileage and going back and forth to the lake every weekend wouldn't hurt so bad. But i dont like ford i never did, but i am watching there trucks, right now i am getting a average of 12.2 mpg this sucks really bad! its a 2012 truck! So i am not sure what to do and in my area the speed limit isnt above 55 , mostly 45 so it isnt me speeding around!

In my case my 2012 is my personal rig and the 2014 is a company car. As to different truck options Ford makes a nice pickup, however most people I've talked to who were excited about the mileage from the EcoBoost have been disappointed. It seems like the 3.08 (?) gears in the 2wd will get 23 or so, but in the 4x4 version with regular gears (3.42?) it is t that great. My father purchased a new 2013 F150 King Ranch EcoBoost 4x4 Crew Cab with middle of the road gears (3.43 IIRC) 2 years ago after hearing about the mileage. He drives 250 miles one way to the lake every weekend in the summer and thought it'd be a good option. He's really disappointed in the MPG. He drives about 80mph on the interstate, runs all synthetic oil, tonneau cover, nitrogen in the tires, new air filter every other oil change, etc. He never cracks 14mpg on the road. The same piece of road I will get 20 on with the 3.6. The King Ranch is a sweet truck and the EcoBoost really lays out the power. Hearing the turbos spool when accelerating in town is pretty fun. But my understanding is that the 5.0 gets similar MPG without the price of admission. The new ones with the lighter body might be better. But can 700 less pounds be that much different? I barely see any MPG change with a quad in the box of my 2012... Good luck!

Yea i was just looking and with your info RAMINIT99, sounds like its not that much difference at all! What lake do you guys go to ? mine is about 50 miles away one way. Yea i just wish a car company would make a truck usable and towable and MPG likeable that us truck people would not stop talking about it! I mean the RAM is great i still thin its the best looking truck out there today, it seems most trucks are trying to look like the RAM. But this MPG does come in play when GAS prices hit the roof, mostly if your unemployed, driving around to interviews! But like i said it would be nice to have a truck that pulls at least 6k and the bed can be used for doing stuff, i do use the bed of my truck! I have the 6 1/2 bed but i do wish i had the extra room in cab, there is just to much for a truck to be the Ultimate truck without killing the GAS wallet! Maybe a Electric truck will come soon.. Na then that wouldnt be a HEMI!

Let me be more specific. The pops and snaps are not just present during warming of the cabin, but continue during the drive as the vehicle hits even very, very minor pavement breaks. The two biggest offenders are the instrument cluster and center stack bezel. An extremely light finger pressure on the lower corners of the instrument cluster will produce snapping and creaking sounds. Light pressure on various areas of the center stack bezel will produce the same thing. It is obvious that even the smallest vibrations transmitted up through the body will disturb and cause a noise.

I've had similar issues with the console components, but a tech advised me on how to fix some of these in my 2010, so I've fixed these myself. I still have a drumming sound coming from the lower portion of the center stack when going over successive pavement breaks. The radio buttons on the back of the steering wheel buzz, too. They are really loose pieces. Tap your fingers on the, you'll see what I mean. The rear doors vibrated with the radio and sometimes on bad pavement. Same with the lower bank of switches on the center stack.

Techs really don't like to deal with these kinds of issues because they can be stubborn things to resolve. I can tell by looking at various interior pieces that they've tried to address some of these issues over my 2010. The surround trim over the cluster, for example, on the 2014 has four screws instead of three on the '10.

I could mention other areas with the threat of boring you. This could be a perfect vehicle if it wasn't for these issues. I've already had two comments from riders about the noises, and they weren't impressed with Ram quality because of it and were vocal about not considering a Ram purchase.

Dusty

Even considering your Hemi 4x4 Crew cab is probably the heaviest version of the 1500, your gas mileage is still the lowest I've heard reported personally by any 4th gen Ram owner. I've hit 23 MPG twice with mine (2WD, Hemi, Quad, 8 speed), but even friends with 4x4 quads say they're getting 17-18 in this cold Western New York winter.

Like Rammit, the people I know driving 3.5 Ecoboosts have not been pleased with the gas mileage, in fact one is driving a 1500 PentaStar today and reports that he's exceeded the EPA MPG figures all summer long by better than 2 MPG. Of course, it's not as fast has his Ecoboost, but I think he's more than pleased with the way the PentaStar runs.

Best regards,
Dusty
