Default 2500 6.4 HD or 2500 Cummins

I currently own a 2014 Ram 1500 4x4 5.7 v8 and it obviously sucks mpg pulling a 30' camper (getting around 6 mpg 7 tops). I am looking to trade this in for either a 2500 6.4 v8 Mega Cab 4.10 axle ratio or a 2500 Cummins Diesel. My Camper is around 34' to tongue and has a dry weight of 6,500 but probably closer to 7500 when loaded. I am looking for any suggestions or info on mpg and pros or cons of each of the two 2500's I am considering for towing this camper around and we do travel a lot with the camper. Thank you in advance.

The diesel *should* do better on fuel...... but, looking at available raw data, it doesn't appear there is much difference when unloaded. I would like to think the diesel would have an advantage when actually hauling something.... but, will it be enough of a difference to offset the additional cost? (both initial cost, plus typical maintenance, and lets not forget the DEF requirement......) That, I don't know...... Given the premium you pay for the diesel, I am of the opinion that would buy a LOT of gas...... plus, the newer trucks should do better, as they have better transmissions...... (go for the 8 speed if you get a choice, with the gas engine.)

Thank you for the response, I think I am leaning towards the 2018 2500 Laramie 4x4 with 6.4 HD as the price is a lot less expensive and as you mentioned, I can buy a lot of gas with that. It is with 4.10 axle ratio and 6 speed as they don't have the 8 like I do have in my 1500.
