Default What issues are with the G3 6.4, Looking to upgrade

I am considering getting a newer HD RAM. Looking at a 2500. A few might have read my Gen 2 posts about my 3500-V10. A great truck in excellent condition. But it is 20 yrs old
Wanting to consider something newer.
I want GAS no diesel.
No 5.7 gas
Option is 6.4 gas. I have searched to find the major issues. Engine as well as trans.
If there are threads, post link.
I read on another forum there are issues with the transmission after 100k. Limited issues with the engine. I guess the manifold bolts break also?

Prices ranges vary all over the assorted 'for sale ' sites. Appears many are high mileage.
Other then normal issues what major problems might I run into

I'm in the same boat, I'm looking at a power wagon. I'm sure somebody might have the 6.4, but I haven't gotten any owner responses about any issues with the PW. I'm gonna follow this thread, because the PW has the 6.4. I'm not excited about the auto trans. But I guess I'll have to take it because I'm not buying a diesel just to get a straight drive.

You own a vmax??

I guess I used the wrong Gen. I meant G4. Trucks made from 2009 to 2018, The 6.4L based trucks are almost not found on for sale sites. I looked for hours. Found a few. Had high miles. High price
From what I find the Auto trans does have issues.. Dont want to redo a trans on a 15 to 20K investment.
I dont want the diesel , the extra weight on a 2500 takes away from my combine weight rating, Cost of maintenance. I only put about 3 to 5k a year on my truck. Mostly pulls the horses about 2 to 3 times a month. Longest trip we take is a 4 hr run. I can afford the added cost of gas.

I had Fords for many years. 7.3 great truck but over weight limit with the trailer etc. The 6.0 was good, did some mods but had a surge issue. Then the V10. It was great. Sold it and the horse trailer to get out of debit.
It looks like I might go back to Ford. Many v10s out there with low miles and good prices. Then there is the Ford 6.2l Can find many of those and they are affordable.

For now the 2000 3500 V10 works for me.. and all paid for .. nice to be debit free

And only 78K miles on it? It's barely broke in...... If it's paid for, why do you want to replace it??

I need to update the sig

Its almost worn out rolled over to 90k last week. Lot of use in the past 4 years .

I was just window shopping,
This rig does have some 'deal with issues.'. Its from the rust zone IL.. Under carriage is rough. I have replaced all the rusted steel brake lines.
The front end has new ball joints, full brake assy system replacement and now the rear brake issues I am dealing with.
As I said on the brake posts - I should have left it alone - brakes were not worn out.. falls under if it aint broke dont fix it..

I wanted to replace the drive shaft universals but the shop could not budge the bolts, they tried heat etc . Shop guy said he was concerned he would brake off the bolts in the rear end pinion yoke, then would have to fix that. So the Ujoints are rusted in place. No way to grease them, and Center carrier bearing is really rusted

And the drive shaft looks like a big rusty shaft.. rust just flakes off. I have treated as much of the rust I can with rusto converter.. grempler..

The exhaust system is major rust , will have to replace that soon.
I am worried about the frame - all the welds are rusted. Even with rust treatment its rough.

Then there is the engine.. if something fails I might have a problem finding a shop that knows how to fix it, I do have a big box of assorted sensors

For now I just have to resolve the brake issue, then it should be Ok for awhile.

My thoughts were to move to a newer truck with less potential issues. But then The mileage will be higher, I am looking for less then 150K miles

But I am still looking . I think I can afford a replacement up to 20K. Have no idea what I could actually get for the Dodge either private or trade-in NADA says about 10K private, Trade is a crap shoot.

My current truck sounds like your v10, lol. Just not as bad. It sat allot, and still does. It's an 05 with only 80,500 miles. It has the 5.7 but it's factory with 4.10s and the nv4500. It's pretty fast for what it is, the 4.10s help allot. I pulled a 30' enclosed triaxle trailer from upstate NY to SC with no problems. All the PWs i found are 40k +/- 2k for age and mileage. I'm sure they are cheaper with high miles but I want something I can keep for awhile after I get it paid off. I'm hoping to buy it outright if I can enough beans saved.
