How to tell when in 4-cyl mode in new Hemi
Hi all,
Just got my new '09 Ram Crew Cab Hemi "Big Horn" edition. Been driving it for about a week now. I was wondering how you can tell when the engine goes into 4-cyl mode. Is there a light or some other indicator that comes on when the cylinders drop off? I now have approx 1900 miles on it so far, but do not know when we go to 4 cyls.

Not all trucks have the "Fuel Saver" indicator in the display. If your truck was built before 12/08, it won't have that feature or the locking tailgate which is standard equipment on trucks built after 12/08.
Mine must have been built before 12/08 because it has never had "fuel saver", or anything remotely like that, displayed in the EVIC display. And I assume it has been in the fuel saver mode before because my best gas mileage on a 50 mile long, mostly downhill run of interstate has been 23.7 mpg.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Even though the truck has 1900 miles on it, I have only driven it a few hundred miles. It was shipped across NYS from the Buffalo area, and then the dealership manager drove it for a while before I bought it. It was built 10/08, so I don't have either locking tailgate (which I really miss) or the fuel saver message. So I guess the only way is to watch my fuel mileage and see what that does. Kinda crazy to have a fuel saver V8and no way of telling when it is saving fuel. Other than these two things, I am thoroughly satisfied with my 3rd Ram.

It was a fifty mile trip that started at 6000 ft elevation, and ended at 3000 ft elevation. The cruise was set at 85 mph the whole way, and the truck got 23.7 mpg. I'm thinking it was running on four cylinders pretty much the whole time.
After you drive it for awhile you'll start to notice when it goes into fuel saving mode. It's supposed to be seamless and the dodge engineers did an amazing job at it. I too am thinking of hooking up an indicator but i'm in no hurry.
