This is true, unless it specifically says that this required inspection be doen by the dealer. For example, the power train must be INSPECTED (not serviced) by a dealer every five years to keep the "lifetime" warranty.

The general manager of the H-D dealer I worked for got in some big trouble because he was telling people that if they don't get their bikes serviced from a dealer the warranty is void, "so the pre-paid maintenance is really an investment of longevity". From what I understand they almost lost the dealership and the pre-paid maintenance company almost cancelled with them.

Advance is having an oil sale right now. 5 quarts of Castrol full synthetic (6.99 qt) and a K&N filter for 25$. I saved 46$ in oil by buying oil for my first change and my wife's Pacifica.

Not sure if I would use the K&N filter though. When I worked for for Parts America, I was there when Advance Auto bought them. Part of the transition was to carry Purolator filters as the "house" brand. The sales rep that was providing the training and explain the products benefits to help with the new transition for regular customers, one of the things that sticks in my mind was that he said NO brand of filter will ever be the same stock. The filters are made for specific applications, where as the aftermarket has to make compromises to fit multiple applications. Sometimes taht is good sometimes it can be catastrophic.

I always use the dealer filter, even though I have not had any problems myself, but I have seen oil starvation in H-D's using a Fram "made" for harley's. To much filtration to help sell them as "filters out more particles by 70%", restricts the oil flow causing drops in pressure.

Again, I didn't have problems with my vehicles before but after a rep from a company that nothing is as good as the factory oil filter, kinda sticks with you.

I hear Fram filters are trash. I have used K&N on a few vehicles and have never had a problem.

I usually used FRAM until I had one leak. When they changed the filter to have the black portion on the closed end, the quality of the filter decreased. They were able to cut costs by doing this. The black portion was not constructed with the same material as the rest of the filter and the leak that I got developed there. An employee of one of the Advance Auto Parts stores in my area told me about the change in the manufacturing that they made.
